VOICE ACTORS: CAN YOU DO BETTER THAN THIS GUY?

Time for another look at award winning radio commercials — spotlighting the good and the bad from the  2007 Radio Mercury Awards.

This one was a finalist in the “Radio Station Produced” category.

What immediately attracted my attention was how “off” the voice talent’s performance is. His delivery is totally disconnected from the experiences his character is relating.

The performance is so wrong that I have no idea if this spot actually could be good.

So…Let’s see what you can do with it.

Here’s The Contest

1. Transcribe the copy from the spot.

2. Produce your own version — without changing a word.

3. Upload your spot using this link.

4. It must be an mp3 file.

5. You must fully identify yourself.

6. The spot must run between 59.5 and 60.5 seconds.

7. By “mp3 recording,” I mean “mp3 recording.” I do not mean .wav file, mp4, or anything other goshdarn format.

The Prize

If you win, you will receive your choice of any one of my mp3 seminars or e-books, as well as worldwide recognition, invaluable bragging rights, and the satisfaction of knowing that you are better than everyone else.

Judging

I will be the sole judge, unless I have other people help me. The decision of the judge(s) is subjective, arbitrary and final. In the event that no one submits a spot the judge(s) deem good enough, nobody wins anything and I’ll donate the mp3 seminar or e-book of my choice to Habitat for Humanity.

Anyone who emails a commercial to me rather than uploading it via this link will be disqualified, publicly disgraced and banned from Major League Baseball. I mean it. Use the upload link. Seriously.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your microphones. And may the best (or most insanely competitive) voice actor win.

The Winner Will Be Announced On This Blog, One Week From Today.

June, 1995 (continued): My second trip this month was to Lake of the Ozarks, where Don Hicks and the Missouri Broadcasters Association had me present Power Phones and Promoting Your Radio Station.

That was the easy part.

The hard part was emceeing the MBA awards banquet that night.

Actually, the REALLY hard part was putting on a tuxedo.

Very few people have ever seen me wearing a tie, much less a tux. I am pleased (and surprised) to report that I actually managed to put on the tux without calling the front desk to ask that someone show me how to do it.

(At first I wasn’t sure what to do with the cummerbund, but finally I assumed I was supposed to wear it as a shoulder holster.)

Luckily for me, the MBA awards show was very well organized. There were audio or video clips for each nominee, and all I had to do was follow the script as I introduced each one.

Even more fortunate was the fact that the NAB’s John David — a former Missouri broadcaster — was in the audience, so I had someone to make fun of.

DAVE FOXX REVEALS HIS VOICE IMAGING PRESETS

Z100/New York’s Dave Foxx was a featured guest speaker at this year’s International Radio Creative & Production Summit.

voiceover presetsOne question he always gets from production geeks — uh, dedicated professionals — is, “What are your presets?”

Here’s the answer…

We’ve just released a limited edition of the Summit 2009 Complete Audio Record. Lots of great tips from Dave Foxx, Nancy Wolfson, Christine Coyle…and some guy named O’Day.
