WAITING FOR SHOT AT BIG TIME
QUESTION FOR DAN O’DAY:
I'm now 40 years old and have been in broadcasting since age 16. I'd just like to work for a broadcast company that will let me use my talents and take care of me. Right now I feel like giving up and going to factory work. Will I ever get a shot at the "big time?" Please help!
DAN REPLIES:

Statistically, the odds are against you. DJs who don't "make it" before 40 usually don't do so after that age, either...unless they reinvent themselves as loud, vitriolic talk show hosts.

What have you done to help yourself?
Have you invested in books, tapes, and/or seminars to advance your skills and your career? I have an entire catalogue of such items, but I don't have a record of you as a customer. And I have conducted professional-level seminars all over the world, but I don't think you're ever attended any.
I certainly don't hold that against you. But if you've spent the past 24 years waiting for someone else to jump-start your career rather than you equipping yourself to move ahead, you might want to reconsider your career strategy.
