UNPROFESSIONAL SALES MANAGER
QUESTION FOR DAN O'DAY:
I really need your opinion about two things...
1) Client-provided copy: When we get it, our sales staff expects us not to touch it, and if it's too long or too short we are expected to "work our magic" with our audio software to stretch or compress it. I mean, these things are either huge or 30 seconds' worth expected to fit a :60!
2) Spots-for-trade where the station never sees the benefit: I can recall where the Sales Manager has traded spots for tickets to the event, and we got nothing to give away to our listeners. "Oh, those were already promised out." There are other instances where he has had clients give him services for air time; I think you get the point.
Any suggestions at all?
DAN REPLIES:
You're describing an unprofessional operation. Resign yourself to working for such an employer, or find a job at a better managed station.
