MORNING SHOW PLANNING
QUESTION FOR DAN O’DAY:
I'm a morning show "sidekick" with a question about Morning Show Planning: How much the day before; how much the morning OF the show? (This is my biggest frustration.) My partner's attitude always is, "Well, let's go home and watch the news and see what happens"...then at 4:30AM we're trying to decide what to do because "nothing happened worth talking about on the news or in the paper last night."
DAN REPLIES:
I don't have an answer for "how much" morning show planning you should do, except: You ALWAYS are preparing your morning show. You ALWAYS are jotting down notes, reading whatever enters your field of vision, looking for ways to delight your audience.
Someone whose idea of show prep is "let's go home and watch the news and see what happens" is a small market, small-time disc jockey with no career and no future. And if that person is the "star" of the show and/or has been at the station much longer than you, you will NOT be able to educate or change him.
