GETTING BACK INTO RADIO
QUESTION FOR DAN O'DAY:
I was working at a radio station in a small market. The station was sold and the new management made it difficult to stay.
Being 22 at the time, I decided to go back to school and get my degree. Now I'm finished with college and living in a medium market.
I would like to get back into radio but am having a hard time.
Is it over for me?
Any suggestions on how to get back in at such a bad time for the industry?
DAN REPLIES:
If you have another source of income to rely on, contact every PD in town to let them know you're available for weekends and fill-in.
PDs often find themselves urgently needing someone at the last minute.
Drop them a note every couple of weeks, just to remind them that you're available. Something should turn up.
And with luck it might work into a full-time gig....or you can parlay part-time in that medium market to full-time in a different, perhaps smaller, market.
