{"id":9872,"date":"2011-05-24T00:01:32","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T07:01:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=9872"},"modified":"2011-05-23T19:07:01","modified_gmt":"2011-05-24T02:07:01","slug":"radio-program-directors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/radio-program-directors\/","title":{"rendered":"HOW TO SUCCEED AS A RADIO PROGRAM DIRECTOR BY AVOIDING SELF-ATTRIBUTION BIAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Self-Attribution Bias<\/strong> is the tendency of many people to credit themselves with their successes and to blame outside influences for their failures.<\/p>\n<p>This term is most frequently found in relation to investing.<\/p>\n<p>When you buy a stock, its value increases, and you sell it for a profit, that&#8217;s because you&#8217;re a shrewd investor.<\/p>\n<p>But when you buy a stock that goes straight to zero, it&#8217;s due to &#8220;market conditions&#8221; or &#8220;economic shifts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Radio is filled with program directors who attribute a good <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/25Ways\">ratings<\/a> book to their own extraordinary programming prowess, leadership abilities, and uncanny knack for staying three steps ahead of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>For those PDs, their good ratings never are partly the result of a slew of great new songs in their format, weak performances by the competition&#8230;or, thanks to consolidation, no real format competition at all.<\/p>\n<p>But when the station&#8217;s ratings drop, it&#8217;s because Management didn&#8217;t give Programming a large enough marketing budget or \u2014 one of my favorites \u2014 it&#8217;s a ratings &#8220;wobble.&#8221; (Funny how they never interpret their successes as statistical anomalies.)<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">One Antidote To Self-Attribution Bias<\/h3>\n<p>When your station does well, give all the credit \u2014 publicly and enthusiastically \u2014 to your staff.<\/p>\n<p>When your ratings drop, shoulder the blame.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Self-Attribution Bias is the tendency of many people to credit themselves with their successes and to blame outside influences for their failures.
