{"id":9116,"date":"2011-03-22T00:01:27","date_gmt":"2011-03-22T07:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=9116"},"modified":"2011-03-21T23:53:06","modified_gmt":"2011-03-22T06:53:06","slug":"advice-radio-program-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/advice-radio-program-director\/","title":{"rendered":"ADVICE FOR THE NEW RADIO PROGRAM DIRECTOR, Part Two"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/succeed-radio-program-director\">Last week<\/a> a new radio program director asked for advice on how to excel at his new position.<\/p>\n<p>My first suggestion was, &#8220;Learn all you can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here are two suggestions to keep you on a lifetime learning curve.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Don&#8217;t Think You Know Everything There Is To Know.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>God save us from people \u2014 whether PDs, managers, air talents, or engineers \u2014 who think they already know everything about anything.<\/p>\n<p>Really successful people always are looking to improve. They&#8217;re always looking for that extra edge.<\/p>\n<p>They know that nobody knows everything there is to know. Not even them.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Don&#8217;t Think You Know Everything That&#8217;s Worth Knowing.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re not one of those jerks who think they know everything there is to know, it&#8217;s also important to avoid the trap of thinking you know everything that&#8217;s worth knowing.<\/p>\n<p>I remember the day I learned the importance of this principle.<\/p>\n<p>I used to attend a yearly Gift Show here in Los Angeles, looking for cool goodies to get for my PD Grad School attendees.<\/p>\n<p>One year I had planned to go.<\/p>\n<p>But I just didn&#8217;t feel like it.<\/p>\n<p>I imagined myself wandering the breadth of the Los Angeles Convention Center, surrounded by endless displays of ceramics and corny novelty items.<\/p>\n<p>I had scheduled the day on my calendar, but I absolutely did not want to go.<\/p>\n<p>Why not?<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t imagine what they might have that year that I hadn&#8217;t already seen. It would be a waste of time.<\/p>\n<p>After much internal debate, finally I forced myself to attend. Even though it couldn&#8217;t possibly be worth my time.<\/p>\n<p>I found the coolest seminar gifts there. Some absolutely terrific new goodies for PD Grad School.<\/p>\n<p>What almost prevented me from going, however, was the fact that I couldn&#8217;t imagine what I didn&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>Remember&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You Don&#8217;t Know What You Don&#8217;t Know<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<p><strong>You Can&#8217;t Even <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Imagine<\/span> What You Don&#8217;t Know.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week a new radio program director asked for advice on how to excel at his new position.
