{"id":47,"date":"2008-07-22T00:15:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-22T07:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blogWORDPRESS\/2008\/07\/22\/this-story-has-nothing-to-do-with-radio\/"},"modified":"2008-07-22T00:15:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-22T07:15:00","slug":"this-story-has-nothing-to-do-with-radio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/this-story-has-nothing-to-do-with-radio\/","title":{"rendered":"THIS STORY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RADIO."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><\/p>\n<p>In a posting last week entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/radio-job-or-radio-career.html\">Radio: Job or Career?<\/a>, I talked about people in our industry who never further their professional educations because &#8220;the company won&#8217;t pay for it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For some reason, I was reminded of a story&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Once there were four auto mechanics: Manny, Moe, Jacques and Aaron. They all went to the Columbia School of Automotive Engineering together, and they all began their careers on the same day at Honest Ed\u2019s Auto Repair.<\/p>\n<p>Manny, Moe, Jacques and Aaron shared a common dream: Each wished someday to work on a race car at the Indianapolis 500.<\/p>\n<p>After their first week at Honest Ed\u2019s Auto Repair, Manny, Moe, Jacques and Aaron thought, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be great to have a subscription to <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Autos &amp; Axles, <\/span>the auto industry\u2019s leading trade publication?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, alas, Honest Ed\u2019s Auto Repair refused to pay for such a subscription.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t we get a subscription ourselves?\u201d suggested Aaron.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you crazy?\u201d responded Manny, Moe and Jacques. <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cA&amp;A<\/span> is expensive! Why, we each would have to give up one beer per week to pay for it! We\u2019ll just wait until we\u2019re making lots of money in Indianapolis, and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">then<\/span> we\u2019ll get a subscription.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d said Aaron, \u201cthen I\u2019ll get a subscription all by myself.\u201d And so he did.<\/p>\n<p>After their first month at Honest Ed\u2019s Auto Repair, Manny, Moe, Jacques and Aaron thought, \u201cIt sure would be terrific to have a copy of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">THE ART OF AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR,<\/span> by the legendary mechanic, \u2018Mercedes Mike\u2019 St. Michaels!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the book was very expensive and, alas, Honest Ed said there just wasn\u2019t money in the budget to purchase it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know!\u201d exclaimed Aaron. \u201cLet\u2019s each pitch in a few bucks and buy it ourselves!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you nuts?\u201d replied Manny, Moe and Jacques. \u201cWhy spend good money to learn what we already know? We\u2019ll wait until we\u2019re famous mechanics at Indy, and then we\u2019ll write our own book!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d said Aaron, \u201cthen I\u2019ll buy the book myself.\u201d And so he did.<\/p>\n<p>One day after their first six months at Honest Ed\u2019s Auto Repair, Aaron said, \u201cHey, guys! Look at the ad for this new wrench! I understand they\u2019ve just started using this at Indy! Why don\u2019t we get one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you taken leave of your senses?\u201d chortled Manny, Moe and Jacques. \u201cYou know Honest Ed will never pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t we pay for it ourselves? It\u2019ll give us a big advantage over all the other repair shops in town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manny, Moe and Jacques exchanged a weary look. \u201cWe\u2019ve got better things to do with our money,\u201d they said. \u201cOnce we get to Indianapolis, then we can buy all the fancy wrenches we want. But knowing what a sucker you are, you\u2019ll probably go ahead and get it yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And so he did.<\/p>\n<p>One evening after their first year at Honest Ed\u2019s Auto Repair, Manny, Moe and Jacques came upon Aaron in Repair Bay #2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, Aaron,\u201d they said. \u201cC\u2019mon, we\u2019re going down to the Pump &amp; Piston to get good \u2019n\u2019 drunk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, thanks,\u201d said Aaron. \u201cI\u2019m trying to figure out a faster and better way to service automatic transmissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d demanded Manny, Moe and Jacques.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat way I could do a better job for Honest Ed and for our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s your point?\u201d asked Manny.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy bother?\u201d snorted Moe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be working faster than anybody in the world when we\u2019re at Indy,\u201d insisted Jacques. \u201cBut if you want to stay here and play with transmissions, go right ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Aaron stayed behind and missed out on an evening that was so much fun that Manny, Moe and Jacques threw up for the next three days.<\/p>\n<p>A year and a half after they started at Honest Ed\u2019s Auto Repair, an excited Aaron came upon Manny, Moe and Jacques and said, \u201cHey, guys! Guess what! There\u2019s going to be a big Auto Mechanics Convention next month, and all the best mechanics from Indy will be there to demonstrate \u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And at this, Aaron stopped. Suddenly he became aware of the expressions on Manny, Moe and Jacques\u2019 faces, and he realized they were laughing at him.<\/p>\n<p>He turned and, still holding his convention registration form, walked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave a good time at the big con-VEN-tion!\u201d Manny, Moe and Jacques guffawed.<\/p>\n<p>Several years have passed since that first day when the four novice mechanics began working together.<\/p>\n<p>Manny, Moe and Jacques still work at Honest Ed\u2019s Auto Repair.<\/p>\n<p>They still laugh at suckers who buy books about auto repair, fools who subscribe to automotive trade publications, and jerks who attend automotive seminars and conventions.<\/p>\n<p>And every year they receive a postcard from Aaron&#8230; postmarked, \u201cIndianapolis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a posting last week entitled Radio: Job or Career?, I talked about people in our industry who never further their professional educations because &#8220;the company won&#8217;t pay for it.&#8221; For some reason, I was reminded of a story&#8230;.
