When your computer keeps freezing up? When \u2014 the ultimate modern crisis \u2014 you can\u2019t access your e-mail??<\/p>\n<p>Upset? Frustrated? Depressed?<\/p>\n<p>In our normal state, we\u2019re not happy; we\u2019re just not unhappy.<\/p>\n<p>For much of our daily lives, we find ourselves in one of two states: Unhappy&#8230;.or Not Unhappy.<\/p>\n<p>What pushes us from \u201cNot Unhappy\u201d to \u201cUnhappy\u201d most often is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">chaos<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The dictionary definition of \u201cchaos\u201d is: <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe confused unorganized state of primordial matter before the creation of distinct forms.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Humans attempt to overcome chaos by imposing some semblance of order upon it. And Radio helps by providing listeners with a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">context<\/span> to the events in their lives.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\">What Does It Actually Mean, Anyway?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cContext\u201d comes from the Latin word, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201ccontexere\u201d: <\/span>\u201cTo weave together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Do you ever sing along with the radio or with a music CD or mp3 player? If so, do ever you find yourself singing in falsetto to match the vocals of the song?<\/p>\n<p>Yes? Why? You could sing it in your own register, in the correct key&#8230;Just an octave or two lower.<\/p>\n<p>You sing in falsetto to maximize the synchronicity of context: to weave the sound of your voice with the sounds coming out of your radio or CD player or mp3 player.<\/p>\n<p>Radio weaves together the strands of listeners\u2019 daily lives into a context that helps fend off the chaos.<\/p>\n<p>Listeners don\u2019t ask Radio to put them in a state of Happiness. They turn to Radio in the hopes that it will help take them out or perhaps keep them out of a state of Unhappiness.<\/p>\n<p>How\u2019s this for a corny (yet, for a successful radio station, honest) slogan?<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cRadio helps people feel they\u2019re tuned in to life.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Our jobs as radio people: To provide meaningful contexts for our listeners&#8217; lives.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Even for a pop music station, Dan?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Do you know what you call a radio station that provides music with no context?<\/p>\n<p>An iPod.<\/p>\n<p>Here is where you can <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/contextual\">read<\/a> the entire <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">CONTEXTUAL PROGRAMMING.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following is excerpted from CONTEXTUAL PROGRAMMING: The Only Way To Win In A Competitive Market.
