When I\u2019m over there, I even give a stab at those British ones, which are very, very hard for an American.<\/p>\n<p>Recently I came across a new English word: <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">retronym<\/font>.<\/p>\n<p>A retronym is a word or phrase created because an existing term that was once used alone needs to be distinguished from a term referring to a new development.<\/p>\n<p>Kind of a long definition, but if I give you a few examples you\u2019ll quickly understand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Retronym Example #1<\/font><\/p>\n<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_JygV9WxRKKc\/SV8DoVJfU6I\/AAAAAAAAARE\/Wzl_q4K4s10\/s1600-h\/Guitar.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 133px; height: 200px;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_JygV9WxRKKc\/SV8DoVJfU6I\/AAAAAAAAARE\/Wzl_q4K4s10\/s200\/Guitar.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5286948478962848674\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the first 500 years that a <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">guitar<\/font> existed, that word was sufficient to describe a guitar.<\/p>\n<p>Then along came the electric guitar, which forced us to rename the original <font style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cguitar\u201d<\/font> as an <font style=\"font-style: italic;\">&#8220;acoustic guitar.&#8221;<\/font><\/p>\n<p>So, &#8220;acoustic guitar&#8221; is an example of a retronym.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Retronym Example #2 <\/font><\/p>\n<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_JygV9WxRKKc\/SV8D6zAHn4I\/AAAAAAAAARM\/elJltQdzzB0\/s1600-h\/RotaryPhone.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 192px; height: 200px;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_JygV9WxRKKc\/SV8D6zAHn4I\/AAAAAAAAARM\/elJltQdzzB0\/s200\/RotaryPhone.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5286948796214255490\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was once known as the telephone or phone. <\/p>\n<p>But over time it became called a<font style=\"font-style: italic;\"> &#8220;rotary phone&#8221;<\/font> to distinguish it from the more advanced phones that came along.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Retronym Example #3<\/font><\/p>\n<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_JygV9WxRKKc\/SV8EEVe9xBI\/AAAAAAAAARU\/WGKmafFqr0c\/s1600-h\/TapWater.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_JygV9WxRKKc\/SV8EEVe9xBI\/AAAAAAAAARU\/WGKmafFqr0c\/s200\/TapWater.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5286948960089261074\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The stuff that came out of a faucet was once known as <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">water<\/font>.<\/p>\n<p>But because so many people now drink so much bottled water, we had to rename this <font style=\"font-style: italic;\">&#8220;tap water.&#8221;<\/font> All of a sudden this stuff got a new name.<\/p>\n<p>I was looking at this list of retronyms that someone had published and it occurred to me that I work very closely with an industry which is now also a retronym, which was once known as <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">radio<\/font>.<\/p>\n<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_JygV9WxRKKc\/SV8ES-9AuJI\/AAAAAAAAARc\/IjUejGCgvmo\/s1600-h\/RadioTower.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 145px; height: 200px;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_JygV9WxRKKc\/SV8ES-9AuJI\/AAAAAAAAARc\/IjUejGCgvmo\/s200\/RadioTower.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5286949211739306130\" border=\"0\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What was once known as radio has been rechristened as <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cterrestrial radio\u201d<\/span> \u2014 radio that just comes out of antennae.<\/p>\n<p>All of these are cases where a new technology or advancement came along and forced the language to adjust to those changes.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not just language that has to adjust. Businesses have to adjust as new things come along.<\/p>\n<p>The previous name for our entire radio industry has traveled way beyond its former meaning as just AM and FM.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve researched this extensively in terms of what the consumer perceives different kinds of radio to be.<\/p>\n<p>We have <font style=\"font-style: italic;\">satellite radio, <\/font>but the consumer perceives that as merely <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">more<\/font> radio.<\/p>\n<p><font style=\"font-style: italic;\">Internet radio<\/font> is seen by the consumer as more radio.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s radio that comes through the TV. You might not think of that as \u201creal\u201d radio, but when you ask consumers what it is they say,\u201dOh, it\u2019s radio that comes through the television.&#8221; They see it as just more radio.<\/p>\n<p><font style=\"font-style: italic;\">Podcasts<\/font> are radio. Radio that has been captured and moved to your iPod.<\/p>\n<p>In America, we are positioning <font style=\"font-style: italic;\">HD radio<\/font> as just more radio, extra radio, with extra stations.<\/p>\n<p>So the consumer is already aware that radio no longer just means what&#8217;s on AM and FM. They are already aware there&#8217;s been an incredible expansion.<\/p>\n<p>What they see is what I refer to as an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danoday.com\/infinite\"><font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Infinite Dial<\/font><\/a>, a world where pretty much any kind of radio they ever might want to consume is available to them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An excerpt from the most important radio book of the 21st Century, THE INFINITE DIAL, by Larry Rosin.
