{"id":20849,"date":"2020-01-27T00:05:40","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T08:05:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=20849"},"modified":"2020-01-27T00:50:57","modified_gmt":"2020-01-27T08:50:57","slug":"radio-advertising-inanity-tv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/radio-advertising-inanity-tv\/","title":{"rendered":"Radio Advertising Inanity Spreads to TV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">For years, incompetent ad agencies have filled the airwaves <\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">with <a href=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2019\/07\/radio-commercial-explains\/obvious\">radio commercials that spend all their time explaining<\/a> concepts that the audience already understands, rather than delivering a clear, powerful sales message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Now this advertising malpractice has spread to television.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/387340614\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The first 17 seconds of this ad are devoted to explaining to viewers why &#8220;asking for help&#8221; can be a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">As an aside: I listened to this spot half a dozen times and still had no clue what was being said at :19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Finally I ran it through <a href=\"https:\/\/otter.ai\/\">Otter<\/a> and determined the mystery word is &#8220;freelanced.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Apparently <em>&#8220;making sure the audience understands what the actors are saying&#8221;<\/em> is nowhere as important as making sure the audience grasps the maddeningly elusive notion of<em> &#8220;asking for help.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The sales message of this advertisement is, <em>&#8220;Turbotax can help with your taxes.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">How can Turbotax help with your taxes?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">No explanation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Why would you choose to ask for help from TurboTax rather than from H&amp;R Block, TaxSlayerPro, TaxAct, TaxSlayer, etc.?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Sorry, they don&#8217;t have time to tell us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">They&#8217;re too busy explaining the almost-impossible-to-grasp concept of &#8220;asking for help.&#8221;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20853\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/TurboTax-Help-Thumbnail-160.png\" alt=\"TurboTax TV commercial &quot;Help&quot;\" width=\"160\" height=\"89\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For years, incompetent ad agencies have filled the airwaves with radio commercials that spend all their time explaining concepts that the audience already understands, rather than delivering a clear, powerful sales message.
