font-size: 14pt;\">The other day I heard something rare in a radio commercial: <br \/><br \/>A real person, really talking.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">First, the commercial:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><audio src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/KRTH-Juul-Commercial-1-19.mp3\" controls=\"controls\"><\/audio><\/span><\/figure>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #800000;\"><strong>The Accomplishment<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Sure, the woman (&#8220;Mimi&#8221;) was coached.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Sure, her audio was heavily edited.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">But that spot achieves something few radio advertisements accomplish: Believability + Impact.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Sure, you can record a real person talking about her real experience with the product or service and the audience will recognize it&#8217;s &#8220;real.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Your radio station already is airing commercials with &#8220;real people,&#8221; with an announcer constantly interrupting the story those people are trying to tell.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">(<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span>Yes, we know the producer had to record 30 minutes with each of those people in an effort to find enough bits and pieces to use.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Although listeners are willing to believe those people are real, they don&#8217;t care.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The dialogue isn&#8217;t conversational and it doesn&#8217;t tell a story.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">That&#8217;s believability without impact.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #800000;\"><strong>How We Know That\u2019s a Real Person Speaking Her Own Words<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">1) Lines a copywriter is extremely unlikely to have created:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m a pain; I&#8217;m a little sister.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>&#8220;We always had to stop for cigarettes.&#8221;<\/em> <br \/>(Brother:) <em>&#8220;Yeah, exactly, it&#8217;s true.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">2) Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/store.danoday.com\/voiceover-career-secrets-harlan-hogan\/\">voice actors<\/a> who are conscious of the need to sound like a real person engaged in a real conversation, &#8220;Mimi&#8221; wasn&#8217;t trying. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">She simply talked.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">For example&#8230; <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">her perfect delivery of <em>&#8220;Get up, first thing, smoke a cigarette. Before lunch, after lunch, another one on the way home, before dinner, after dinner\u2026&#8221;<\/em><br \/><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">and<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"> &#8220;I remember recently you asking me, like, &#8216;Did you want to smoke before we go in?&#8217; and I was like, &#8216;No, I don&#8217;t need to.'&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I&#8217;m good at writing dialogue.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I couldn&#8217;t have written that line.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">3) No attempt at &#8220;banter.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The people converse effortlessly, with no conscious attempt to show the audience their familiar, comfortable relationship.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">4) A convincing laugh that&#8217;s barely noticeable.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>&#8220;Now that I&#8217;m talking about it&#8221;<\/em> \u2014 the brother briefly laughs as she continues <em>&#8220;\u2014 I&#8217;m kinda feeling like I&#8217;ve lost about 4 hours of every day.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">That laugh shows us it&#8217;s real.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It&#8217;s difficult to imagine<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; a copywriter including <em>&#8220;(brother chuckles)&#8221;<\/em> at that spot<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; the commercial&#8217;s director telling an actor, &#8220;<em>Make that cough much smaller, almost invisible; it&#8217;s an involuntary unconscious reaction to what your sister is saying.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; a voice actor playing that moment with such 100% realism.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">5) No copywriter would&#8217;ve included the brother&#8217;s commenting, <em>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t realize it was that much.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If that line appeared in an earlier draft, a good copywriter would&#8217;ve deleted it because it doesn&#8217;t directly move the sales story.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">After all, the test I teach <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2018\/09\/radio-advertising-best-practices\/\">advertising copywriters<\/a> is, <em>&#8220;If you delete that line, will it lessen the impact of the sales message? If not, get rid of that line.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The only reason <em>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t realize it was that much&#8221;<\/em> is there is that&#8217;s what the brother spontaneously said.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Does it strengthen the impact of the sales message? <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">No. At least, not directly.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">But it strengthens the believability of the sales story, which indirectly does strengthen the spot&#8217;s impact.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">6) No announcer interrupting the story.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Only Stumbles<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The woman stumbles when she segues into the solution she discovered.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">She&#8217;s at ease when talking about her smoking habit but unsure when introducing the product name.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A Metaphor to Illuminate the Above Sentence<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">She&#8217;s driving down a familiar highway, devoting little conscious thought to the mechanics of making her car do what she wants it to do.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Finally, however, it&#8217;s time for her find the exit ramp.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">She tightens up.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Her eyes dot back and forth, checking for traffic in parallel lanes, checking her speedometer, checking the odometer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Her ease has been replaced by a tense alertness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">We hear that tenseness when she refers to the product:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>&#8220;So I started looking in&#8217;an Juul came up&#8221;<\/em> \u2014 between &#8220;looking&#8221; and &#8220;Juul&#8221; is an awkward, &#8220;best we can do&#8221; edit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Probably she actually said something like, <em>&#8220;So I started looking into e-cigarettes and Juul came up.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">But Juul doesn&#8217;t want to be lumped within the &#8220;e-cigarette&#8221; category; hence, the edit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Her directions probably were:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cJust tell us in your own words. How did smoking cigarettes affect your daily life, and how were you able to stop smoking them? When you get to &#8216;Juul,&#8217; don&#8217;t make a big deal out of it. Don&#8217;t become an announcer.
