I&#8217;m curious what your thoughts are on jingles in commercials.\u201d<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Dan Replies:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">For a local advertiser, a jingle should be used only if it helps drive home the sales message; if you were to hear only the jingle, you&#8217;d know who the advertiser is and what problem he solves for the consumer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The first thing I&#8217;d do is ask the client, <em>&#8220;Why do you want a jingle?&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">He&#8217;ll probably respond, &#8220;<em>Because I still sing the jingle of XYZ Plumbers from 30 years ago&#8221;<\/em> or <em>&#8220;To stand out from the other commercials&#8221;<\/em> or <em>&#8220;I dunno. Just seems like a good idea.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If he gives you the first answer, ask: <em>&#8220;Have you ever used XYZ Plumbers?&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Mostly likely the answer will be no.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;So although you remember the jingle, it never caused you to become one of their customers. Sure, we can produce a catchy jingle for you, but getting people to remember you name isn&#8217;t enough to make your cash register ring.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Before we decide whether to go with a jingle, we need to delve deeper into exactly what you want your ad campaign to accomplish. How will you measure its success? What actions do your prospects need to take to become your customers&#8230;.?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Easiest Way to Sell a Radio Commercial Campaign to a Local Business Owner<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Radio veterans know that the easiest way to sell a commercial schedule is to <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2017\/09\/client-voicing-radio-commercial\/\">have the business owner voice the spot<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The second easiest way to sell a commercial schedule is to sing the advertiser\u2019s name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This Los Angeles area automobile dealership <strong>loves<\/strong> its jingle.<\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-20249-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Keyes-on-Van-Nuys.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Keyes-on-Van-Nuys.mp3\">http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Keyes-on-Van-Nuys.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><br \/>\nThat advertiser has been using that jingle for a couple of decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I heard their radio commercials for many years before I even realized they\u2019re a car dealership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Honestly, I assumed they&#8217;re a place that makes keys, and they\u2019re on Van Nuys Boulevard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Is that because I\u2019m incredibly dense?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Undoubtedly that\u2019s the explanation you\u2019d get from the agency and the advertiser: <em>&#8220;He just doesn&#8217;t get it.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">But I\u2019m no dumber than the average radio listener, and the reason it took me so long to realize what the heck that advertiser sells is that their commercials sells\u2026their jingle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The jingle isn\u2019t even very good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The production is mediocre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The weak falsetto lead makes it difficult to understand the lyrics without effort \u2014 and what radio listener wants to <strong>work<\/strong> to understand the words of a commercial jingle?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>This Jingle Reaches Two Types of Listener<\/strong><\/span>s.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The two types of listener who hear this jingle are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">1. People who aren\u2019t familiar with \u201cBarbara Ann,\u201d the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Beach Boys\u2019<\/strong><\/span> hit from the \u201960s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">(Yeah, I know the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Regents<\/strong><\/span> had the original hit. And yeah, I know the lead singer is <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Dean Torrence<\/strong>,<\/span> of Jan &amp; Dean.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">2. People who <strong>are<\/strong> familiar with \u201cBarbara Ann.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">For listeners who don\u2019t know the original song, all they hear is a lame jingle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">They don&#8217;t react with delighted recognition upon hearing a fun song from their past. To them, it&#8217;s just some dumb jingle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Here\u2019s Something The People Behind This Campaign Apparently Don\u2019t Realize.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The listeners who remember the hit song compare this jingle to\u2026the Beach Boys\u2019 version:<\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-20249-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Barbara-Ann.mp3?_=2\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Barbara-Ann.mp3\">http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Barbara-Ann.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><br \/>\nIt\u2019s like comparing someone who failed the open auditions for <em>AMERICAN IDOL<\/em> to <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Kelly Clarkson.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It&#8217;s downright embarrassing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">There\u2019s no way that advertiser will dump the jingle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">But at least they could feature their product\/service in the song\u2019s hook. You know, the part that \u201cgets stuck\u201d in people\u2019s heads?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">What\u2019s The Story?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A good commercial <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/advertising-expert-video\/\">s<\/a><em>ells the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">results<\/span> of the product or service being offered.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It does so by painting a picture of someone enjoying those results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If you force yourself to listen to this commercial, what do you picture?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The woman answering the phone, probably seated at some sort of desk. Although it\u2019s supposed to be \u201cthe emergency room,\u201d the phone sfx and her voice tone are more likely to generate the image of an office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The guy on the phone has \u201ca song stuck in my head.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">So he does what most people do when they have songs stuck in their heads: He calls the emergency room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">That is <strong>so<\/strong> relatable to our everyday experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Buy From Us; We Lie To You.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cEveryone\u2019s singing, \u2019cause everyone\u2019s saving.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022 No one is singing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022 Where does the <em>\u201ceveryone\u2019s saving\u201d<\/em> claim come from? How is it demonstrated or proven in the commercial?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022 <em>\u201cYou and the rest of L.A.\u201d<\/em> got that jingle stuck in their heads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">No, they don\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">For every listener who hears this spot and <strong>doesn\u2019t<\/strong> have that jingle stuck in their heads, the advertiser is a liar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I Got Your Unique Selling Proposition Right Here. Two of Them.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cCome in now and get a free appraisal!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Holy cow! A car dealer that offers a FREE APPRAISAL??<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Talk about an irresistible offer\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cPlus, we\u2019ll buy your car whether you buy ours or not.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Another Stop The Presses moment: They buy used cars. And they\u2019ll buy yours even if you don\u2019t buy a vehicle from them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">That\u2019s the best they can do with 60 seconds of air time? Brag about their jingle, offer a free appraisal, and mention that they buy used cars?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Ah, But The Advertiser Will Say&#8230;.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cOh, yeah? How come whenever someone learns I\u2019m with Keyes on Van Nuys, they immediately sing the jingle to me??\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Well, think back to when you first began to advertise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">What was your goal?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Was it to get people to sing your jingle when they meet you?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Or was it to motivate people to buy cars from your dealership?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">I guarantee the advertiser does <strong>not<\/strong> hear this very often: \u201c<em>What a great jingle!
