font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">When I was a jock, <em>Billboard<\/em> was the radio trade publication that everybody read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Eventually it was supplanted by a much newer publication called <em>Radio and Records.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Unlike <em>Billboard, R&amp;R<\/em> was devoted solely to radio.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>R&amp;R<\/em> was hipper and move alive than <em>Billboard.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>Billboard<\/em> looked like (and was) a magazine, while <em>R&amp;R<\/em> looked like (and pretty much was) a newspaper.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>R&amp;R<\/em> was exciting to read. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">When it arrived in Friday\u2019s mail, every radio personality and program director would turn to &#8220;Street Talk&#8221; (mostly written by some fellow named<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <strong>John Leader<\/strong><\/span>) or, depending upon their circumstances, the \u201cJobs\u201d section.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">A few years ago one of my readers told me that at his radio station, management ripped out the \u201cJobs\u201d section before allowing the programming staff to see the publication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">But <em>Billboard<\/em> remained popular with radio people for a single reason:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/thisbusiness \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19787\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/claude-hall-this-business-radio-programming.jpg\" alt=\"Claude-Hall-This-Business-Radio-Programming\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/claude-hall-this-business-radio-programming.jpg 200w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/claude-hall-this-business-radio-programming-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Claude Hall<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Claude was their \u201cradio editor.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">His &#8220;Vox Jox&#8221; column was every bit as exciting as the newest issue of <em>R&amp;R.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">It was obvious that he loved radio and he loved radio people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Although I\u2019m sure the reason isn&#8217;t cloaked in mystery, I never knew precisely why <em>Billboard<\/em> decided it no longer needed &#8220;Vox Jox.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I could\u2019ve asked Claude, but I never did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Perhaps long ago he told me what happened, and I\u2019ve managed to file it under \u201cThings I No Longer Remember, Darn It.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">But when Claude left <em>Billboard,<\/em> the magazine became irrelevant to us radio people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Claude was <em>Billboard&#8217;s<\/em> radio soul. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">When he left, he took the magazine&#8217;s soul with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>R&amp;R<\/em> had the entire field to itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif; color: #800000;\">Plucked from Radio Obscurity<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I spent my first two years on the air trying to sound like a &#8220;good jock.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Hitting the posts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Avoiding the dreaded &#8220;dead air.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Trying to make my on-air voice sound deep and ballsy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">As I look back on it now: Trying to add &#8220;swagger&#8221; to my sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Somewhere I still have a tape of terrific contest I created and produced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The radio contest itself was a big success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Conceptually and creatively, I&#8217;m still proud of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">But you&#8217;ll never hear it, because I so completely failed in my attempt at a deep voiced, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Jack McCoy<\/strong><\/span>-style VO delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The highly produced promos weren&#8217;t narrated by some guy with a deep, dramatic voice that added tension and suspense to the spot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Anyone \u2014 in or out of radio \u2014 who hears it instantly realizes it&#8217;s some normal-voiced guy trying \u2014 unsuccessfully \u2014 to sound like one of those dramatic, deep-voiced guys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">As I entered my third year as a radio disc jockey, I decided to stop trying to &#8220;sound like everybody else, only better.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">(I wish I&#8217;d been aware then of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Oscar Wilde&#8217;s<\/strong><\/span> admonition to <em>&#8220;Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.&#8221;)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Rather than showing up for my show and &#8220;winging it,&#8221; I began to use that program as a opportunity to express myself humorously, comedically and satirically&#8230;between the records.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The Radio Personality Competition<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Later that year \u2014 knowing I didn&#8217;t have a chance, but what the heck? \u2014 I entered <em>Billboard&#8217;s<\/em> annual awards competition for radio personalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">But I had a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">To enter, I had to submit an aircheck of my show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The rules specified the aircheck couldn&#8217;t run longer than 2 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Or maybe it was 3 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I was writing and producing comedy sketches that ran anywhere from 90 seconds to 4 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">==========<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"> Little Known Historical Note<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Once upon a time, <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/radio-music-host-honest-or-dumb\/\">music radio hosts<\/a> typically were given a maximum of 7 seconds to squeeze &#8220;their own stuff&#8221; in between program elements.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"> ==========<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">There was no way I could demonstrate my mastery of &#8220;the basics&#8221; (intros, outros, live PSAs, etc.) and include the only thing that made my show special \u2014 my produced comedy bits \u2014 in a 2-minute recording.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I considered my options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I could follow the rules, submit a 2-minute aircheck, and have no chance of being anything other than one of hundreds of 2-minute airchecks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Or I could submit an aircheck that included two original comedy bits while also showing I could do the basics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">In other words, I could submit a 5-minute recording&#8230; despite the rules&#8217; clear admonition that it shouldn&#8217;t exceed 2 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I&#8217;m guessing mine was the only one among hundreds of entries to run 5 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I knew that would disqualify me, but it seemed pointless for me to send in a 2-minute entry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">One day the latest <em>Billboard<\/em> arrived, and it listed the people who&#8217;d been selected in each category (market size, format).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Mine was one of the names on that page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Claude had looked past my lack of respect for rules and, I guess, liked what he heard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">(I think there might&#8217;ve been mention of a &#8220;judging committee,&#8221; but I always had the feeling Claude was the entire committee.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">A year later, I entered the competition again \u2014 this time as a major market jock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Once again, I saw my name among the other jocks from other formats and markets around the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Without Claude&#8217;s bizarre appreciation for my work, maybe I&#8217;d still be a jock in that tiny, unrated market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The Book About Radio<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">While he still was writing &#8220;Vox Jox,&#8221; Claude and his wife, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Barbara,<\/strong> <\/span>shaped a big bunch of his columns into a book:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #800000;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">THIS BUSINESS OF RADIO PROGRAMMING.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>Billboard<\/em> published it via a subsidiary, Watson-Guptill Publications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">It was and remains the best book ever written about radio programming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I hate to say that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">After all, I&#8217;ve written a couple of well-received books about radio myself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">But Claude&#8217;s &amp; Barbara&#8217;s is the best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">If you have a choice between four years of studying radio in college or reading <em>THIS BUSINESS&#8230;,<\/em> choose the book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Watson-Guptill allowed the book to go out of print, where it remained for years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif; color: #800000;\"><strong>&#8220;Let&#8217;s Get Your Book Back in Print!&#8221;<\/strong> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I believe I spoke in person with Claude only once, when I visited him at his <em>Billboard<\/em> office in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">But we kept in touch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Around 1999 I contacted him and said, <em>&#8220;Hey, your book is too good not be in print. How about if I publish and market a new edition?&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>&#8220;I think the publisher still owns the rights to it,&#8221;<\/em> he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">&#8220;Well, they&#8217;re not doing anything with it. Since apparently they have no interest in it, why don&#8217;t you ask them to reassign the rights to you?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">After months of scratching their heads, trying to think of a reason not to let the rights of a book they&#8217;d long ago abandoned revert to the author, the original publisher said yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Which I thought was pretty nice of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">No, We&#8217;re <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Not<\/span> Going to Use My Copy.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">So, Claude had the publishing rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">But he didn&#8217;t have a version in manuscript form, didn&#8217;t have the original plates from which it was printed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I would have to take an existing copy and send it to a specialty publishing house that would break the binding, photograph all the pages, and create a new edition for us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I sure as heck wasn&#8217;t going to give them mine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">So I found a copy of the original on eBay, paid a bunch o&#8217;money for it, and had them tear that one apart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I pay Claude &amp; Barbara a royalty for each copy sold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">After our new version had been on the market for about a year, Claude shocked me by saying, &#8220;You&#8217;ve already paid us more in royalties than we ever received from <em>Billboard.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">I&#8217;m sure <em>Billboard<\/em> (via Watson-Guptill) had sold a lot more copies than I.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">But perhaps they&#8217;d been less than generous with their royalty payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">If you go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/claude.hall.96\">Claude&#8217;s Facebook Page<\/a>, you&#8217;ll find tributes from some of the many radio people who were inspired, befriended and encouraged by Claude.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Claude Hall passed away barely a week ago \u2014 July 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Thank you, Claude.
