{"id":19483,"date":"2017-01-23T00:01:47","date_gmt":"2017-01-23T08:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=19483"},"modified":"2017-01-23T00:01:47","modified_gmt":"2017-01-23T08:01:47","slug":"radio-copywriters-targeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/radio-copywriters-targeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Radio Copywriters: Which Customers Do Your Commercials Target?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.danoday.com\/5step\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-19486 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Radio-Copywriting-Active-Passive-Customers-15.jpg\" alt=\"Radio Copywriting Tip\" width=\"307\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Radio-Copywriting-Active-Passive-Customers-15.jpg 307w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Radio-Copywriting-Active-Passive-Customers-15-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Radio-Copywriting-Active-Passive-Customers-15-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a>A Loyal Reader Writes:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I was recently re-reading your article called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.danoday.com\/articles\/beforeyoubeginwritingaspot.shtml\">&#8220;Before You Begin Writing A Spot, Ask&#8230;&#8221;<\/a> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And one of the questions says, <em>&#8220;Is the product or service targeted at active or passive customers?&#8221; \u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Some newer business owners may not know how to answer that, or they may have different ideas on what kind of customer is considered &#8220;active&#8221; or &#8220;passive,&#8221; and I doubt I could explain it as well as you. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Can you provide a basic definition?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dan Replies:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Let\u2019s start with one of my key tenets:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Radio Advertising Solves Problems.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One of your listeners has a problem that they can\u2019t solve themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Your advertiser has <strong>the<\/strong> (not \u201ca\u201d) solution to that person\u2019s problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The commercial acts as a \u201cmatchmaker\u201d between the two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">An active customer is someone who is suffering from the problem and needs that solution <strong>now:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They have a terrible toothache but don\u2019t have their own \u201cregular\u201d dentist. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Their challenge isn\u2019t to find \u201ca\u201d dentist. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It\u2019s to find the <em>right<\/em> dentist to solve their problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A passive customer is someone who <em>will<\/em> need the solution provided by the advertiser\u2019s product or service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They might need it \u201csooner or later.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Or it might be something they want to do or know they need to do, but it\u2019s oh-so-easy to put off until some other time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Joining a health club?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Making a will?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Finally doing something about that that backyard fence that needs to be repaired or, more likely, replaced?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">None of those is urgent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They can let it go another week, another month, another six months without suffering any noticeable consequences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">(Unless they happen to die during that time period, in which case their family might suffer the effects of their having died without leaving a will.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Your advertiser wants to say to the active customer, \u201cHey! We\u2019ll handle it for you. <em>Take this action<\/em> (telephone, email, website visit, walk in) now, and we\u2019ll do the rest. We\u2019ll solve that problem for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A common example of passive customers for dentists is someone who recently moved to your community. They don\u2019t need a dentist now, but eventually they will. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Or they have toddlers and know that, to be a responsible parent, they\u2019ll need to take the kiddies to the dentist\u2019s office every six months or so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Your advertiser wants to say to the passive customer, \u201c<strong>You<\/strong> are going to have this problem. And when you do, <strong>we<\/strong> are the ones who will fix it for\u00a0 you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you were to advertise the emergency telephone number, 9-1-1 (or 9-9-9 in the UK or 1-2-2 in the EU), you\u2019d be targeting <em>passive<\/em> customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Right now, they don\u2019t need to call 9-1-1. They\u2019re not faced with an emergency situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But if they might suffer an emergency sometime in the future, they need to learn <em>now<\/em> what phone number they should call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">An active customer would be someone who at this very moment is experiencing an emergency. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If that person hasn\u2019t already learned \u201cIn an emergency, call 9-1-1,\u201d this probably isn\u2019t the time for a radio ad campaign to educate them.<\/span><br \/>\n==============<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Because earlier in this article we referenced the dental profession, this is a good time to make sure you know about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dentistradiocommercial.com\/\">this radio commercial for dentists<\/a>.
