{"id":18544,"date":"2015-09-08T00:01:05","date_gmt":"2015-09-08T07:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=18544"},"modified":"2015-09-08T00:01:05","modified_gmt":"2015-09-08T07:01:05","slug":"radio-sales-placebos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/radio-sales-placebos\/","title":{"rendered":"RADIO SALES EXECS WHO SELL &#8220;PLACEBOS&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/radio-sales-objections-ebook\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18546 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Radio-AD-Placebo-15129.png\" alt=\"Radio advertising sales objections\" width=\"313\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Radio-AD-Placebo-15129.png 313w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Radio-AD-Placebo-15129-188x300.png 188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><\/a>A recent study indicates roughly half of American physicians prescribe placebos for some of their patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A placebo, of course, is a &#8220;pretend&#8221; medication that is prescribed without the patient&#8217;s knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Often it&#8217;s used as a &#8220;control&#8221; in a medical study, to compare the effects of an experimental drug with those of something that, by itself, should have no effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;The Placebo Effect&#8221; refers to the phenomenon of people reporting symptom relief simply because they believe they&#8217;re receiving genuine treatment for their ailments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The superficial response to this phenomenon is to think, &#8220;Boy, people sure are gullible.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But there&#8217;s considerable evidence to suggest that, at least in some cases, placebos can genuinely reduce physical symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Dan Ariely<\/strong><\/span> points out in his book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/preditably-irrational\">PREDICTABLY IRRATIONAL<\/a>,<\/em> the expectation of a physiological response can trigger that response: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;In the case of pain, expectation can unleash hormones and neurotransmitters, such as endorphins and opiates, that not only block agony but produce exuberant highs (endorphins trigger the same receptors as morphine).&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ariely speaks from experience. He was hospitalized for three years with third degree burns over 70% of his body:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;I vividly recall lying in the burn ward in terrible pain. As soon as I saw the nurse approaching, with a needle almost dripping with painkiller, what relief! My brain began secreting pain-dulling opiods, even before the needle broke my skin.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But Dan, What Does This Have to Do with Radio Advertising?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">We&#8217;re almost there; stay with me&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Placebo&#8221; derives from a Latin term that means &#8220;I shall please.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sometimes, the patient actually experiences improvement from the pleasant expectation of relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Unfortunately, too many <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/radio-spec-spots-via-newspaper\/\">radio advertising salespeople<\/a> routinely sell placebos to their clients: worthless commercials that &#8220;please&#8221; the advertiser, that make the advertiser feel good (temporarily)&#8230;but which do not produce the result the client needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In a medical situation, a &#8220;pretend&#8221; medication that actually reduces some patients&#8217; pain has value, and those patients are pleased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But no amount of &#8220;pleasing&#8221; advertisers by saying their names 12 times, reciting their phone numbers, street addresses, business hours and every sale item by name and price will produce the results they really need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Those account execs will land some orders by selling placebo spots. But they&#8217;ll be committing advertising malpractice, and the patient \u2014 the client \u2014 will pay the price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Meanwhile, most stations happily will continue to sell clients whatever they want. To please them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Way It Usually Is<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Advertising Client:\u00a0 <em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t like that commercial.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Radio Station:\u00a0 <em>&#8220;We&#8217;ll change it! Just tell us what to do.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Way It Should Be<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Advertising Client:\u00a0 <em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t like that commercial.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Radio Station:\u00a0 <em>&#8220;So?&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Now I Have Enraged a Few Thousand Sales Managers.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know what planet he lives on, but in our world if the client doesn&#8217;t like the spot, we replace it with a different one.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Imagine, If You Will&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Patient:\u00a0 <em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t like the taste of that medicine.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Doctor: <em>&#8220;You don&#8217;t like the taste? Well, then, just tell me what taste you do like and I&#8217;ll prescribe you a drug that will please your palate.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">No, here&#8217;s how any responsible (professional) doctor would respond:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;So?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As a <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/streetwise-radio-sales\/\">radio advertising professional<\/a>, your job is not to make the client happy.
