{"id":18224,"date":"2015-05-25T00:20:05","date_gmt":"2015-05-25T07:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=18224"},"modified":"2015-05-25T00:29:00","modified_gmt":"2015-05-25T07:29:00","slug":"advertise-features-or-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2015\/05\/advertise-features-or-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Why You Shouldn&#8217;t Advertise Features OR Benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Last week on <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/DanODayRadio\">my Facebook page<\/a> I posted a brief blurb for radio copywriters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A longtime friend of mine who&#8217;s one of the best copywriters around took exception to my advice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It might be helpful to share with you here my original statement, my friend&#8217;s objection, my rebuttal\u2026and an additional rebuttal for today&#8217;s readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Original Radio Advertising Maxim<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Radio advertising copywriters long have been told, <em>&#8220;Don&#8217;t sell features; sell benefits.&#8221; <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wrong. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Don&#8217;t sell features <strong>or<\/strong> benefits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sell the <strong>results<\/strong> the consumer will experience by using the advertised product or service.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One Reader&#8217;s Objection<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Paul Myers,<\/strong><\/span> a copywriting legend who&#8217;s been at it since before the invention of the written word, replied:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;The expected change in state IS the benefit, Dan. [sigh]&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">My Devastating Rebuttal<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">No, the expected change is not the same as the benefit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To illustrate\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Feature:<\/strong> The all-new PoundsAway contains Miodyoxide-104, which speeds the human body&#8217;s metabolism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Benefit:<\/strong> By increasing your body&#8217;s metabolic rate with PoundsAway, you&#8217;ll lose 20 pounds in 2 weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Result:<\/strong> (Female) Now you can go shopping for a new bathing suit to wear at the beach this summer.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Result:<\/strong> (Male) Now you won&#8217;t have to spend your entire summer vacation<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">**<\/span> holding in your stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">(<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span>More than one source has explained to me that &#8220;shopping for a new bathing suit&#8221; is a far greater motivator than <em>wearing<\/em> a new bathing suit. Otherwise, I would tout the result as &#8220;now you can wear even your most revealing bathing suit on the beach.&#8221;)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">(<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">**<\/span>&#8220;Vacation&#8221; is a term that few radio people will understand. If I knew what it meant, I would tell you.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One More Feature &#8211; Benefit &#8211; Results Example<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Often in <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/seminars\">my radio copywriting seminars<\/a> I&#8217;ll offer this illustration\u2026.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Feature:<\/strong>\u00a0 The automobile has four doors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Benefit:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because the automobile has four doors, it&#8217;s easier for people to get out of the backseat more easily and quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Results:<\/strong>\u00a0 So when you&#8217;re picking up your kids at school, they&#8217;ll be able to climb into the backseat so fast that the impatient carpool parent behind you won&#8217;t even have the time to honk at you before you&#8217;re driving away.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week on my Facebook page I posted a brief blurb for radio copywriters.
