We know the &#8220;dead person&#8221; isn&#8217;t actually accusing the recipient of causing her death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But even metaphors need to make sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Let&#8217;s Analyze this Radio Commercial for Quebec Auto Insurance.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The engine that drives the story is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Someone looked down for just a moment to send a text\u2026 and as a result, died.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What&#8217;s more dramatic than a woman causing her own death by texting while driving?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A woman causing someone <em>else&#8217;s<\/em> death by texting while driving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Someone who now will go through life carrying the guilt of causing another person&#8217;s death (a friend&#8217;s; a child&#8217;s; a young mother &amp; infant) is much more tragic than someone who caused her own death due to her own wanton disregard not only for her own safety but for the safety of everyone else on the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Imagine that this spot <em>did<\/em> tell the story of a woman who caused another person&#8217;s death. Here&#8217;s how it would begin:<\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-17792-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/QuebecAutoInsurance-EDIT.mp3?_=2\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/QuebecAutoInsurance-EDIT.mp3\">http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/QuebecAutoInsurance-EDIT.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><br \/>\nDid you notice how much stronger it was to begin the commercial with, &#8220;I never thought it would end like this&#8221;?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Voice Over Performance Notes for this Radio Commercial<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I have no way of knowing if the performance was hampered by the casting, the voice actor&#8217;s choices, or the direction the voiceover artist was given.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But the delivery is heavy, ponderous, resentful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That voice over delivery reinforces the impression that she really is blaming the friend for her own death.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Casting for this Radio Commercial<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Quick \u2014 demographically speaking, what type of person immediately pops into your mind when I say &#8220;person who carelessly texts while driving&#8221;?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A teenaged girl. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Or a young woman between the ages of 16 and 23.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That should be the target audience for this spot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To reach that target audience, the protagonist should sound as though she&#8217;s one of them.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Did that voice sound like it belonged to 16-to-23-year-old?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That radio advertisement had good intentions\u2026but a weak execution.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tim Fen brought this radio commercial to my attention, commenting that the &#8220;powerful message demonstrates the emotional impact of good radio advertising.&#8221; While it&#8217;s not a bad spot, it could be much stronger.
