{"id":17773,"date":"2014-12-18T00:03:52","date_gmt":"2014-12-18T08:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=17773"},"modified":"2014-12-18T00:03:52","modified_gmt":"2014-12-18T08:03:52","slug":"radio-deny-verbal-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/radio-deny-verbal-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"RADIO HOSTS WHO DENY THE VERBAL REALITY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/radio-personality-principles-mp3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17775 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/paintbrush_pallette_1600_clr_15266-320.png\" alt=\"painting pictures in radio listener's minds\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/paintbrush_pallette_1600_clr_15266-320.png 320w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/paintbrush_pallette_1600_clr_15266-320-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/paintbrush_pallette_1600_clr_15266-320-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>When I coach radio talent, one of the first things I teach them is the importance of &#8220;honoring the verbal reality&#8221; \u2014 a concept that originated in improvisational theater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Simply stated, honoring the verbal reality means that on your radio show, <em>whatever is stated is real.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The opposite of honoring the verbal reality is &#8220;denying the verbal reality.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Usually that occurs when one on-air person refuses to play along with another in deliberately painting a particular picture in the radio listeners&#8217; minds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Here are two real radio examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A Los Angeles Morning Radio Show Denying the Verbal Reality<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The morning host of an L.A. radio station spent at least a minute mocking the loud Hawaiian shirt his news guy was wearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The news guy tried to defend himself and his loud Hawaiian shirt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Then the DJ said, <em>&#8220;No, I&#8217;m just kidding. He&#8217;s actually wearing a regular shirt, just as he always does.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What???<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The two of them spent a minute or more painting in my mind&#8217;s eye a vivid picture of the news guy&#8217;s wild shirt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Then they wiped that image clean, removed it from my brain, and replaced it with the unpleasant realization that I had been lied to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If the host says to the newsperson, &#8220;That&#8217;s a wild Hawaiian shirt you&#8217;re wearing,&#8221; the newsperson can give any response <strong>except<\/strong> <em>&#8220;I&#8217;m not wearing a loud Hawaiian shirt.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If Jock #1 says to Jock #2, <em>&#8220;Hey, you parked in my parking space again today,&#8221;<\/em> Jock #2 cannot respond, <em>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t even drive to work today, so obviously I didn&#8217;t park in your space.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">We&#8217;ll ignore the fact that very few disc jockeys have their own personal parking spaces<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The only one I can think of, offhand, is <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/gary-burbank-waky-last-day\/\"><strong>Gary Burbank<\/strong><\/a> when he worked at WLW\/Cincinnati. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And that was only because he couldn&#8217;t think of what else to demand in his new contract, so he said, &#8220;\u2026and I want my own parking space.&#8217; \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In fact, if we were on the radio right now and I said something about DJs having their own parking spaces and you were my partner, you would <em>not<\/em> correct me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You wouldn&#8217;t say, <em>&#8220;That&#8217;s just stupid, Dan. I don&#8217;t know of any radio DJs who have their own parking spaces!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Why not?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Because you&#8217;d be denying the verbal reality I had just created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That &#8220;Hawaiian shirt&#8221; encounter is a typical example of deliberately denying the verbal reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It can be equally deadly, however, to lessen the audience&#8217;s experience in a more subtle manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Denying the Verbal Reality on Public Radio<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I hear versions of &#8220;denying the verbal reality&#8221; in all formats and markets, but I hear this &#8220;subtle&#8221; denial most often on local public radio stations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Before I go further\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I&#8217;ve been a public radio listener for years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I&#8217;ve consulted numerous public radio stations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Public radio has lots of real &#8220;radio people&#8221; working for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It also has has a number of people who are on the air but never had the benefit of learning radio from the ground up. Often they came to radio sideways \u2014 making a lateral move from some other industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I bring this up because earlier this week I heard someone denying the verbal reality on a Los Angeles public radio without ever having a clue about the pictures that are created in listeners&#8217; minds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Whether or not on-air hosts try to create a visual image , listeners will generate mental pictures based upon what they hear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I&#8217;m in my car, listening as the radio host welcomes the station&#8217;s traffic reporter, who has just arrived with the latest traffic update.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They&#8217;re chatting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Granted, their chatter is inane. Here&#8217;s how they begin their conversation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Good Monday to you.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;And good Monday to you!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you live far from North America and are thinking, &#8220;I guess that&#8217;s a typical greeting in America&#8221; \u2014 no, it&#8217;s not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Real people don&#8217;t say &#8220;Good Monday to you!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But that&#8217;s not the denial of verbal reality that sparked this article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They chat inanely for 30 seconds or so. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I don&#8217;t know what either of them looks like. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I\u00a0don&#8217;t know what their broadcast studio looks like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But I can see them sitting side-by-side in that radio studio, casually chatting away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Until one of them says to the other, <em>&#8220;Of course, you can&#8217;t see me now, but if you could you&#8217;d be impressed that I&#8217;m more dressed up than usual today\u2026&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wait! What?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She can&#8217;t see you?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But you two are side-by-side in the radio studio. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Or on opposite sides of the console.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">We can <em>see<\/em> it, because we can hear it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Your voices are perfectly matched. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Thanks to good microphones, good equipment and good engineering support, the processing is the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Because of the way your voices sound, your listeners see you in the same room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That is their verbal reality.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It wasn&#8217;t created by your words; it was created by the tone and sound of your conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You weren&#8217;t thinking about it because you&#8217;ve never thought about it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You didn&#8217;t deliberately deny your radio audience&#8217;s verbal reality. You did so unknowingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But when your listeners suddenly realized their pictures were &#8220;wrong,&#8221; they were disappointed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Whether or not you want them to, the sounds you broadcast always result in mental pictures for your listeners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Take responsibility for the pictures you paint, for the verbal realities you create in the minds of your listeners. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/Public-Radio-Personality\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Public Radio and Personality<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I coach radio talent, one of the first things I teach them is the importance of &#8220;honoring the verbal reality&#8221; \u2014 a concept that originated in improvisational theater.
