{"id":17694,"date":"2014-11-21T00:09:42","date_gmt":"2014-11-21T08:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=17694"},"modified":"2014-11-21T00:09:42","modified_gmt":"2014-11-21T08:09:42","slug":"mike-nichols-radio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/mike-nichols-radio\/","title":{"rendered":"MIKE NICHOLS AND MY RADIO CAREER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I was in my first year of radio, working at my second station, in Naples, Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On Saturdays I worked an 8 (or was it 10?)-hour shift, babysitting the network feed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A few times each hour, I&#8217;d pop into the studio and play the local commercials and station I.D.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I spent much of the rest of my time browsing through the station&#8217;s record library, immediately outside the broadcast studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It was there I came across several LPs by <strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mike Nichols &amp;\u00a0Elaine May<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And my world changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/store\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17695 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/NicholsandMay-480.png\" alt=\"NicholsandMay-480\" width=\"480\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/NicholsandMay-480.png 480w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/NicholsandMay-480-300x233.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Photo courtesy of the Dan O&#8217;Day collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I&#8217;d never heard anything like it. Two voices. Two people conversing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On the surface, a comedy sketch. Just beneath, sharp commentary on our culture and, sometimes, the human condition <i>(aka<\/i> the silliness of humans).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Is there a style of music you absolutely love? When you hear it, it&#8217;s as though it was written or performed on your own personal wavelength?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That&#8217;s how it was for me with Nichols &amp;\u00a0May. They just happened to be on my personal wavelength.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">From the first time I heard them, I experienced their performance as a musical style that I loved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It was a dozen years later before I experienced that sensation again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I had moved back to Los Angeles. At the time, L.A. had a thriving Equity Waiver (i.e., tiny theaters with little if any budget) scene, and I had subscribed to some service that offered half-price theatre tickets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One day they offered tickets to something called Sills and Company. I had no idea what that might be, but it was half-price and I had nothing else to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sills and Company was in East Hollywood. On or near Heliotrope Drive. It looked like a converted garage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It turned out &#8220;Sills&#8221; was <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sillsspolintheaterworks.com\/biography\/city-story-theater-founder-paul\">Paul Sills<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0I&#8217;d never heard of him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Soon I&#8217;d learn he was co-founder of Chicago&#8217;s Compass Theater and its successor, Second City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The entire evening consisted of improvisational &#8220;theater games,&#8221; played by a company that included <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Valerie Harper, Dick Schaal, Richard Libertini<\/strong><\/span> (who was breathtakingly brilliant at improv),<span style=\"color: #000080;\"> <strong>Severn Darden<\/strong><\/span> (considered by many to be the ultimate improv genius), <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Garry Goodrow<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Avery Schreiber<\/strong><\/span>, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Paul Sills would call two or more players onstage, tell them what game they were playing and then stand on the sidelines, waiting for magic to happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That night, I heard that music again, for the first time in more than a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It wasn&#8217;t <i>similar<\/i> to what I had felt when listening to Nichols &amp; May; it was the <i>same<\/i> feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Only later did I learn that the team of Nichols &amp;\u00a0May was born in Chicago, as members of the Compass Theater, directed by Paul Sills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In fact, it was Sills who introduced them to each other, saying, &#8220;\u2018I want you to meet the only other person on the campus of the University of Chicago who is as hostile as you are.\u2019&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/mp3seminars\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17696 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/HoffmanBancroft-320.png\" alt=\"The Graduate kissing\" width=\"320\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/HoffmanBancroft-320.png 320w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/HoffmanBancroft-320-300x209.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Remember the scene in <i>THE GRADUATE<\/i> when Anne Bancroft (Mrs. Robinson) is smoking a cigarette and Dustin Hoffman summons the courage suddenly to kiss her\u2026and when he finishes, she exhales a cloud of smoke?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That moment was directly lifted from a Nichols &amp;\u00a0May sketch created years earlier. No one ever accused the film&#8217;s director of plagiarism; the director was Mike Nichols.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If it weren&#8217;t for those Nichols &amp;\u00a0May records, I&#8217;m not sure I ever would have stopped trying to be a great DJ and, instead, begun writing and performing my own material on the radio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Probably it&#8217;s not a coincidence that so much of my stuff was simple, two-voice dialogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In radio, time is compressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Unlike film or TV, you&#8217;re not allowed several minutes to establish a character or scene. From your very first words, your audience needs to know who and where you are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">By &#8220;who,&#8221; I don&#8217;t mean just the identity of your character. Your listeners quickly should understand the <i>attitude<\/i> of your character.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Occasionally I&#8217;ll illustrate this with the opening of one of Nichols &amp;\u00a0May&#8217;s most famous routines:<\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-17694-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/NicholMays1.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/NicholMays1.mp3\">http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/NicholMays1.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><br \/>\nWith that one line, Elaine told us volumes about her character. That was a woman guided by an obstructive nature, and she&#8217;d never voluntarily <i>help<\/i> a customer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Here&#8217;s the entire routine:<\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-17694-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/audio\/NicholsMay.mp3?_=2\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/audio\/NicholsMay.mp3\">http:\/\/danoday.com\/audio\/NicholsMay.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><br \/>\nHumor, like music, produces a subjective experience for those who consume it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I can&#8217;t speak for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But for me, listening to that routine again today, more than 50 years after it was recorded, is just as exhilarating as it was the first time I heard it outside the broadcast studio in that little radio station in Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was in my first year of radio, working at my second station, in Naples, Florida.
