{"id":17688,"date":"2014-11-20T00:22:16","date_gmt":"2014-11-20T08:22:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=17688"},"modified":"2014-11-20T00:22:16","modified_gmt":"2014-11-20T08:22:16","slug":"radio-hosts-topics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/radio-hosts-topics\/","title":{"rendered":"RADIO HOSTS&#8217; GUARANTEED METHOD FOR PICKING THE RIGHT TOPIC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/contextual-radio-book\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17689 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Secret-320.png\" alt=\"Radio host topics\" width=\"320\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Secret-320.png 320w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Secret-320-292x300.png 292w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a> As many radio personalities know, I&#8217;m a big believer in Show Prep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Show Prep is <i>not<\/i> the same as &#8220;scripted.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The more prepared you are before cracking the mic, the easier it is for you to act spontaneously according to the flow of the show and your audience response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I devote an entire seminar to what I call <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/contextual-radio-programming\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Contextual Programming<\/b><\/span><\/a>, which truly is the only way for a radio station to win the ratings battle in a competitive market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In that seminar, I point out that sometimes you <i>think<\/i> you know what your listeners want to talk about (or hear about)\u2026only to have your audience correct you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">How do you know for <span class=\"s1\">sure<\/span> what your listeners are interested in?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They\u2019ll <b>tell<\/b> you&#8230;<i>If<\/i> you listen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On the anniversary of the assassination of President <b>John F. Kennedy, <\/b>a British radio host commemorated the event by interviewing two experts on the \u201cconspiracy theories\u201d that surround that terrible moment in U.S. history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The \u201cexperts\u201d heartily disagreed with each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The host thanked them for their participation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Then he opened up the phones:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i>\u201cWhat do you think? Was JFK killed by a lone gunman, or was there a conspiracy behind it?\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And he gave the studio phone number several times so listeners could weigh in with their opinions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Perhaps not surprisingly, not one of the listeners in that town in England seemed to have much of an opinion about whether or not there was a conspiracy behind the death of an American president decades earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i>No one<\/i> called.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In desperation, the host started filling time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He mentioned that he remembers exactly what he was doing when he learned that JFK had been shot: He was watching a TV program called<i>\u00a0Double Your Money.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And at <b>that<\/b>, the phones lit up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You&#8217;re an experienced radio pro, right? Go ahead, guess what everyone was calling in about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Oops. Sorry, you&#8217;re wrong<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You made the mistake of &#8220;knowing&#8221; you can predict the radio audience reaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You immediately and confidently guessed, &#8220;They called in to say what they were doing when they heard about JFK&#8217;s death.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That\u2019s what I would have guessed, too. But that\u2019s not what they called for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They called to say, <i>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t <\/i><span class=\"s1\">Double Your Money<\/span>.<i> It was <\/i><span class=\"s1\">Harry Worth<\/span><i>\u00a0that was on the telly that night.\u2019 \u201d <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And for the rest of the hour listeners phoned called in to argue about what was on television when the news of Kennedy\u2019s death was announced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I don\u2019t care how much preparation you\u2019ve done for your show. If the audience tells you they\u2019re interested in something else (and it fits your overall programming), you\u2019re a fool if you don\u2019t listen to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When you interview celebrities or politicians, how can you know beyond the shadow of a doubt what questions your listeners would <i>most<\/i> like to have answered?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Well, you could ask them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But I don\u2019t mean at the beginning of the show, begging for callers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I mean the Tuesday before the interview, tell your listeners that you\u2019ll be interviewing that person on your program on Thursday&#8230;and if there\u2019s something they\u2019d dearly love you to ask that person, they should e-mail or text you with their question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Either you or a producer or an intern can quickly glance through the questions, and you&#8217;ll discover two things:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">1.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A few really good questions you wouldn\u2019t have thought of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>An obvious demand by many listeners to hear the answers to <i>one or two<\/i> particular questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I am <b>not<\/b> saying that you should slavishly ask whatever questions are suggested by your listeners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I <b>am<\/b> saying that if you give them a chance, they will help you program your show so that it\u2019s more relevant and more interesting to <i>them<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/contextual-radio-mp3\"><span class=\"s1\">CONTEXTUAL RADIO PROGRAMMING: The Only Way To Win in a Competitive Market<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As many radio personalities know, I&#8217;m a big believer in Show Prep.
