Although the client insists that these spots are effective for them, I have serious doubts that I&#8217;m hitting the mark with respect to what I&#8217;ve tried to follow after reviewing Dan O&#8217;Day instructional pieces.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Here is one of the spots from the Italian restaurant&#8217;s radio campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-17677-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/VitosPizza-JimmyHeil.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/VitosPizza-JimmyHeil.mp3\">http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/VitosPizza-JimmyHeil.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><br \/>\nBefore I begin this critique, let&#8217;s return to your statement that &#8220;the client insists that these spots are effective for them.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If the client truly means &#8220;effective&#8221; \u2014 if it&#8217;s driving traffic to the restaurant and increasing his business \u2014 then keep on doing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I suspect, however, that what the client actually means is, &#8220;I like those radio ads, and people have told me how funny they are!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If that&#8217;s the case, you <em><span class=\"s1\">still<\/span><\/em> should keep doing it, because the client is happy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But I doubt he&#8217;s actually making a positive return on his advertising investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The &#8220;lame imitation of The Godfather&#8221; is a trite, nonsensical approach to advertising an Italian restaurant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Effective restaurant advertising sells the <em><span class=\"s1\">experience<\/span><\/em> the guest will have when dining there. I suspect the real dining experience at Vito&#8217;s doesn&#8217;t include oddball mafiosos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Much of the dialogue of the &#8220;Godfather&#8221; imitation is incomprehensible to the listener.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A radio commercial for a restaurant should have a single <strong>Core Message<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0the one thing you want the targeted listener to hear, to understand and to remember.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Here are the potential core messages in this spot:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Private party &amp; banquet room. (I <em><span class=\"s1\">think<\/span><\/em> that&#8217;s what I heard on the fifth attempt.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pizza<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pasta<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">House salads<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Some sort of special offer on Tuesdays\u2026which I simply can&#8217;t decipher<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Canoli<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Monday is Something-or-Other Day; I can&#8217;t understand the special offer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Daily house lunch special<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Which of the above is the one thing you want to communicate? Whichever it is, why are all of the other elements there to compete for the listener&#8217;s attention?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I like the line, <em>&#8220;Leave a tip, take the canoli.&#8221;<\/em> Not as an effective selling tool but as a funny take-off on the line from the movie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>&#8220;Next to the train station on Main, downtown Kingsport&#8221;<\/em> \u2014 That is <strong><span class=\"s1\">exactly<\/span><\/strong> how you should identify the location of a retail establishment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You didn&#8217;t include their street address or phone number \u2014 good!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But the biggest problem isn&#8217;t the lack of a Core Message. It&#8217;s this:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What The Radio Audience Pictures Is What The Audience Will Remember.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I pictured:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A big, thuggish actor imitating\u00a0a movie mafioso<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Someone doing a Marlon Brando imitation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The opening scene from <em><span class=\"s1\">THE GODFATHER<\/span>,<\/em> &#8220;the day of your daughter&#8217;s wedding&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A <span class=\"s1\">cannolo<\/span>. (I pictured just one. You might have pictured two or more <span class=\"s1\">connoli.)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A fish wrapped in newspaper (from the &#8220;sleep with the fishes&#8221; line)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I didn&#8217;t picture any of the many things this advertisement attempted to sell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Why not?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Because all of them were presented as dialogue (either by the characters or by the announcer).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In a radio commercial, you can&#8217;t rely on words to carry your sales message. The pictures you paint in the listener&#8217;s mind are what the listener will remember.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Like so many radio spots, this one left the listener with mental images that don&#8217;t include the product or service being advertised. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/restaurants\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Radio Advertising for Restaurants<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jimmy Hill of Bristol Broadcasting submitted two radio commercials for critiquing. &#8220;I&#8217;ve produced a 5-unit campaign for this client.
