{"id":16948,"date":"2014-04-29T23:47:41","date_gmt":"2014-04-30T06:47:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=16948"},"modified":"2014-04-30T01:55:44","modified_gmt":"2014-04-30T08:55:44","slug":"radio-contest-stereotypes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/radio-contest-stereotypes\/","title":{"rendered":"RADIO PROMOTION PLAYS WITH STEREOTYPES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Here&#8217;s where most <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/contests\">radio promotions<\/a> come from.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">PROGRAM DIRECTOR: Anybody got a good idea?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">STAFF MEMBER: Why don&#8217;t we do that thing we did last year?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">STAFF MEMBER #2: What about that thing (Another Station) did in (Another Market)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">PROGRAM DIRECTOR: What about you, (Promotion Director)? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">PROMOTION DIRECTOR: Do I still have no budget?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">PROGRAM DIRECTOR: (sigh)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">PROMOTION DIRECTOR: What about that thing we did last year?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But if you keep your eyes and ears open, you needn&#8217;t run out of fresh, original, fun, audience-engaging promotional ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I&#8217;m sure I could introduce this as pithily as <a href=\"http:\/\/happyplace.someecards.com\/30920\/a-map-of-us-stereotypes-drawn-by-brits\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Corbett<\/a>, but that would take me far longer to write than simply quoting him:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Recently, the folks at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/tomphillips\/the-stereotype-map-of-every-us-state-according-to-british-pe\" target=\"_blank\">Buzzfeed<\/a> asked the blokes in their British offices to put down their tea, turn down the Beatles and stop obsessing about the Royal Family for long enough to fill in a map of the United States based purely on stereotypes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;They obliged, which isn&#8217;t surprising, considering that the assignment sounds a whole lot more interesting than writing another article about a potential Spice Girls reunion or how they&#8217;ll manage to not win the World Cup this time around.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Warning:<\/strong> If you&#8217;re likely to be offended by crude language or someone making fun of your religion, political beliefs and\/or beloved geographical affiliation, please don&#8217;t look at this map.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Seriously. We don&#8217;t need another religious-political-geographical war here. The important thing, for the purposes of Us Creative Radio Folk, is that we can springboard from this silly map to a fun, free promotion that you can fit perfectly to <strong>your<\/strong> audience and market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16959 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/BuzzFeed-British-Stereotype-900.jpg\" alt=\"radio contest ideas\" width=\"681\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/BuzzFeed-British-Stereotype-900.jpg 900w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/BuzzFeed-British-Stereotype-900-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 681px) 100vw, 681px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So, there&#8217;s the inspiration.<\/span>Probably you were amused or you were offended. Maybe both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">All of these can be done on your Facebook page. Or on your blog. Or anywhere else you choose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You can have people vote on their favorite submissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You can have a Distinguished Panel of Judges decide which entries make it to the Radio X unOfficial Map of (\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You&#8217;ll also end up with something highly visual, which your local TV newscast may shock you by talking about on-air, assuming you create a map that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* Is visually striking<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* Either has no bad language or that has the naughty words covered up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At this point, one reader wants to say,<em> &#8220;The TV station in our market never mentions us.&#8221;<\/em> True, but that&#8217;s because until now you&#8217;ve never given them something that they felt could add to their program&#8217;s entertainment\u2026uh, &#8220;news&#8221; value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Linear Examples of How Your Radio Station Can Adapt This<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have your American audience make a &#8220;stereotype&#8221; map of Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have your Canadian audience make a &#8220;stereotype&#8221; map of the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have your non-European audience make a &#8220;stereotype&#8221; map of Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have your European audience make a &#8220;stereotype&#8221; map of Europe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">More Creative Examples of How Your Radio Station Can Adapt This<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have your audience (wherever they are) make a map of the U.S. based solely on what they see on television. To tell them to disregard everything they might know from other sources; their only references can be TV shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Examples: <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They might have images of Calabasas (or, more broadly, &#8220;the Valley&#8221; in Los Angeles) based on the antics of those wacky Kardashians or, perhaps, of the considerably more admirable <em>Ray Donovan.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Impressions of Albuquerque (or, more broadly, New Mexico) might be drawn from <em>Breaking Bad.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Their impression of New York City might be influenced by<em> Sex in the City<\/em> or, perhaps, by <em>Law &amp; Order.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">How Your Snooty Public Radio Station Can Adapt This<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That was a joke. I know your public radio station isn&#8217;t really snooty. Some of my best friends (not to mention clients) are public radio stations. I was teasing you. We&#8217;re still good?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have your audience (wherever they are) make a map of the U.S. based solely on references from literary fiction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">How Your Sports\/Talk Station Can Adapt This<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have your listeners make a map of the U.S., based on common stereotypes of the various local teams&#8217; fans and\/or players.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have your listeners make a map of the U.S., based on the sports they play in each region, special rules, etc. (Example: New England&#8217;s the only I place I know where people engage in Duckpin Bowling.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">How Your Political Talk Station Can Adapt This<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have your listeners make a map of the U.S., based on common stereotypes of the political leanings and foibles of the various geographic areas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Special Interest&#8221; Radio Station?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There&#8217;s no limit to where you can take this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Make a map based on the local denizens&#8217; musical preferences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Make a map based on what rock stars came from where.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Make a map that pinpoints Famous Sex Scandals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Make a map highlighting stereotypes of the kinds of cars people there drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When I work with radio stations or morning shows, often I&#8217;ll teach them how to create what I call their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danoday.com\/seminars.shtml\">Unique Listening Proposition<\/a>. It&#8217;s not terribly difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The radio consultant or programmer who puffed out his chest and declared, <em>&#8220;There are no new ideas under the sun&#8221;<\/em> really was saying, <em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know how to have a new idea.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But you do.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s where most radio promotions come from.
