{"id":15414,"date":"2013-07-23T00:01:36","date_gmt":"2013-07-23T07:01:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=15414"},"modified":"2013-07-21T21:36:28","modified_gmt":"2013-07-22T04:36:28","slug":"radio-show-producer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/radio-show-producer\/","title":{"rendered":"THE ROLE OF A RADIO SHOW PRODUCER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">A Loyal Reader Asks:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">&#8220;What should be the role of someone who produces a show but is not the star of it?&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">First, you should know that &#8220;producer&#8221; means different things in different cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">To many European radio people, &#8220;producer&#8221; = &#8220;boss.&#8221; This most often happens in public radio environments, much less frequently at commercial stations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">I always find it amusing when someone from a European station pays for consulting advice from someone whose sole qualification is that s\/he once worked as &#8220;(American Radio Star)&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danoday.com\/producer\/\">morning show producer<\/a>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">They think that means that person was the star&#8217;s <strong>boss<\/strong>. Sorry, no.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Although the station pays the producer&#8217;s salary (with a few top-tier exceptions in which the highly paid star hires and pays for his own staff), the producer is there to serve the air talent \u2014 even though the producer also is prey to the expectations, demands and whims of the program director. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">I&#8217;ve worked with some large European public broadcasters that employ the &#8220;state&#8221; or &#8220;national&#8221; model they inherited from the days when they had no competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">In some instances, although the producer wasn&#8217;t &#8220;the boss,&#8221; she decided what topics, guests and features would be included in the day&#8217;s program. With that model, the host essentially is handed the outline for each day&#8217;s show and it&#8217;s his job to bring it to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">That&#8217;s a very efficient model. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">But in radio, what&#8217;s most efficient rarely is most effective. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">It&#8217;s much more effective when the on-air talent has a vision for the program and it&#8217;s the producer&#8217;s job to help bring that vision to life. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">With that background, here&#8217;s my answer to the question&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The producer&#8217;s role is to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u2022 Make the host look good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u2022 Make the guests (both &#8220;celebrities&#8221; and listeners) look good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u2022 Make sure the program always is moving forward, that at any given <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">moment it has a goal.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Loyal Reader Asks: &#8220;What should be the role of someone who produces a show but is not the star of it?&#8221; First, you should know that &#8220;producer&#8221; means different things in different cultures.
