{"id":14343,"date":"2013-03-14T00:01:29","date_gmt":"2013-03-14T07:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=14343"},"modified":"2013-03-13T22:05:27","modified_gmt":"2013-03-14T05:05:27","slug":"self-revelation-radio-djs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/self-revelation-radio-djs\/","title":{"rendered":"THE MAGIC OF SELF-REVELATION FOR RADIO DJs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Almost all radio personalities with successful, long-term careers have this in common:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">They reveal something of themselves while on-air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The more you reveal of yourself, the more you become a human being and not just an &#8220;announcer.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">And listeners relate to people much more easily than they do to announcers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Unfortunately, some radio people have been told by uninformed program directors: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">&#8220;Never talk about yourself on the air. The audience doesn&#8217;t care about you.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Of course they do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Your listeners are interested in you \u2014 if you share parts of your life with them in an interesting manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Some of those same PDs have foolishly instructed their hosts never to say &#8220;I.&#8221; Instead, they should say &#8220;you.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">According to this rule, rather than say, <em>&#8220;I was late for work today because I couldn&#8217;t find my car keys,&#8221;<\/em> you&#8217;re supposed to say, <em>&#8220;Have you ever had trouble finding your car keys?&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Ridiculous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">I remember my very first radio job, in the tiny town of Chatham, Virginia. At the end of my first air shift, the PD called me into his office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">I was literally shaking with fright. I was certain he was going to fire me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">What would I do then? I had spent every penny I had to move clear across the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">How could I face my friends and family, having failed so miserably in my new career?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The PD closed the door and said&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The previous five paragraphs didn&#8217;t use the word &#8220;you&#8221; even once. But the words &#8220;I,&#8221; &#8220;me,&#8221; &#8220;my&#8221; and &#8220;mine&#8221;\u00a0 appeared 13 times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Did that prevent you from being interested? Or in some way did you identify with my predicament? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">(By the way, nothing happened then&#8230;Because that event didn&#8217;t occur. I did move across the country for my first radio job, which was in Chatham. But I wasn&#8217;t fired \u2014 &#8220;laid off&#8221; with the rest of the staff\u00a0\u2014 until a month later.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Or&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">(And this story is completely true, so you don&#8217;t have to worry about being suckered&#8230;.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">I remember the very first record I ever bought: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">&#8220;Running Scared,&#8221; by <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Roy Orbison<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">It cost me 79 cents at the La Salle Music Shoppe in West Hartford, Connecticut. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">I still remember taking the shortcut across the cemetery to get there on that chilly Saturday in October.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">That&#8217;s probably not the most compelling true story you&#8217;ve ever heard. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">But I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if it triggered some sort of memory from your own experience \u2014 the first record you bought, the first record store you ever went to, maybe just some local cemetery in your hometown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">You don&#8217;t alienate your listeners by sharing your life with them\u00a0\u2014 not if you do it in an interesting, relatable, compelling manner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Rather, such details serve as a bridge between your life and theirs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">As a radio listener, if I spend three or four hours with you and at the end of your show haven&#8217;t learned anything at all about you, my time has been wasted.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Almost all radio personalities with successful, long-term careers have this in common: They reveal something of themselves while on-air.
