Whether uttered aloud or thought silently, your response consisted of two words:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cOh, ____.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But\u2026<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re a dedicated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danoday.com\/contextual\">radio program director<\/a>. You work long and hard, trying to perfect your product and build your audience&#8230;and then some idiot disc jockey screws it all up by playing a record out of rotation or reading the wrong liner card.<\/p>\n<p>You go nuts. How hard can it be to follow a music clock when the computer has done all the work for you?<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re furious. You want to kill the guy.<\/p>\n<p>You know what? It goes with territory. That\u2019s part of the frustration of being a program director. That\u2019s why you get the private office and the business cards and maybe even your own parking space.<\/p>\n<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_JygV9WxRKKc\/SGCj5y2UeeI\/AAAAAAAAACg\/9fu3nwlY4Es\/s1600-h\/SuperChicken2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215348581792512482\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_JygV9WxRKKc\/SGCj5y2UeeI\/AAAAAAAAACg\/9fu3nwlY4Es\/s320\/SuperChicken2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"219\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>As Super Chicken was fond of reminding Fred, \u201cYou knew the job was dangerous when you took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you want to motivate your staff to its peak performance, you wait until after the jock has finished his air shift and after you\u2019ve calmed down.<\/p>\n<p>By that time, you might decide it really isn\u2019t worth talking about.<\/p>\n<p>If you decide it is worth discussing, you pick a time, place and manner which enable you to motivate the jock to perform better, rather than simply to let off steam and ruin the rest of his show.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">P.S. <\/span>If a consultant ever hotlines a jock, the consultant should be fired.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Radio Program Directors: Don\u2019t hotline your jocks. \u201cHotlining,\u201d of course, consists of hearing the air personality make a mistake and immediately calling him on the phone during his airshift to scream at him.
