{"id":12507,"date":"2012-05-01T00:01:22","date_gmt":"2012-05-01T07:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=12507"},"modified":"2012-04-30T21:49:05","modified_gmt":"2012-05-01T04:49:05","slug":"clear-channel-bob-pittman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/clear-channel-bob-pittman\/","title":{"rendered":"IN DEFENSE OF CLEAR CHANNEL&#8217;S BOB PITTMAN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During a time when everyone is quick to bash corporate radio, I find myself in the unexpected position of feeling obliged to defend the reputation of Clear Channel CEO <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Bob Pittman<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, someone has launched a very sophisticated campaign to make Pittman appear to be an idiot.<\/p>\n<p>This first came to my attention more than a year ago, when online trade publications claimed Pittman had assured an industry convention that radio doesn&#8217;t have anything to fear from iPods <em>&#8220;because people don&#8217;t want to have to program their own music.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oh. Right. That explains why Apple has sold only 300+ million iPods.<\/p>\n<p>Why would people want to make the effort to load an iPod with their favorite music, when instead they can listen to a radio station that plays music that might occasionally include a couple of their favorite songs?<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, Pittman couldn&#8217;t have said anything that stupid.<\/p>\n<p>Those same, scurrilous radio journals reported that at a more recent radio conference, Pittman assured attendees that &#8220;traditional&#8221; or &#8220;terrestrial&#8221; radio has nothing to fear from Pandora.com.<\/p>\n<p>Pandora, he explained, is <strong>not<\/strong> &#8220;radio.&#8221; It&#8217;s a jukebox.<\/p>\n<p>All we need to do is get people to stop referring to Pandora as a form of &#8220;radio,&#8221; and everything will be fine.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how I know Pittman never would have said that:<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s both stupid&#8230;and it&#8217;s wrong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stupid:<\/strong> If its millions of users think of Pandora as a form of &#8220;radio,&#8221; then it&#8217;s radio.<\/p>\n<p>Conducting campaigns trying to convince Pandora lovers (or advertisers) that Pandora isn&#8217;t radio is both futile and&#8230;Well, stupid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wrong:<\/strong> If you&#8217;ve never used Pandora, here&#8217;s how it works:<\/p>\n<p>You begin your own &#8220;station&#8221; by indicating some of the music artists you enjoy. Then Pandora plays a variety of music not only by those artists by also by others who share some important musical traits.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Pandora.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12513\" title=\"Pandora\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Pandora.png\" alt=\"Pandora vs. terrestrial radio\" width=\"320\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Pandora.png 320w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Pandora-300x133.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>Gradually, with your continual input (approving new songs you like, rejecting new songs you dislike) Pandora refines a playlist that reflects your tastes and interests.<\/p>\n<p>Discovering artists you weren&#8217;t familiar with but whose music fits your personal taste is one of the joys of listening to Pandora. Pandora offers variety, surprise, discovery&#8230;all in an attempt to play music <strong>you<\/strong> like.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Jukebox.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12514\" title=\"Jukebox\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Jukebox.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Jukebox.jpg 320w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Jukebox-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve never used a jukebox, here&#8217;s how it works:<\/p>\n<p>You put money in, you select a song, and the jukebox plays the song you selected.<\/p>\n<p>There is no way Bob Pittman could be stupid enough to think that describes the way Pandora works, too.<\/p>\n<p>Almost as an afterthought, it&#8217;s claimed that Pittman also declared Pandora can&#8217;t establish the &#8220;personal&#8221; connection to its listeners that &#8220;real&#8221; local radio stations can.<\/p>\n<p>You know \u2014 that distinctively human, determinedly local and unabashedly personal quality for which Clear Channel stations have become synonymous.<\/p>\n<p>Y&#8217;know what?<\/p>\n<p>When I hear a radio station play the same music with the same impersonal voices delivering the same bland liners as hundreds of other cookie cutter stations across the country, as a listener I don&#8217;t have a &#8220;personal&#8221; experience with the radio station.<\/p>\n<p>But when Pandora sees that I like <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/video-bobs-private-musical\/\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>The Bobs<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and therefore decides to introduce me to <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Da Vinci&#8217;s Notebook<\/strong><\/span>, whenever I share <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/how-to-write-a-hit-ballad\/\">&#8220;Title of The Song&#8221;<\/a> with a friend, I thank Pandora for that personal introduction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a time when everyone is quick to bash corporate radio, I find myself in the unexpected position of feeling obliged to defend the reputation of Clear Channel CEO Bob Pittman.
