{"id":11230,"date":"2011-10-19T00:01:07","date_gmt":"2011-10-19T07:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=11230"},"modified":"2011-10-16T20:08:50","modified_gmt":"2011-10-17T03:08:50","slug":"career-radio-personality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/career-radio-personality\/","title":{"rendered":"HOW TO BUILD YOUR CAREER AS A RADIO PERSONALITY, Part Two"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Grow As A Person.<\/h3>\n<p>Most disc jockeys enter radio at a young age \u2014 the majority, I suspect, before the age of 21.<\/p>\n<p>Upon embarking on a career in such a competitive, demanding field, it&#8217;s all too easy to concentrate 100% of your energies on &#8220;radio&#8221; and 0% on your own mental and personal growth.<\/p>\n<p>The result is an endless supply of 30- and 40-year old disc jockeys who are no more well-rounded (i.e., no more interesting) than they were when they were 20.<\/p>\n<p>Read more than the trades, the tabloids, and your favorite blogs. Find and explore your own special corners of the human experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> One of my favorite radio personalities subscribes to<em> Soldier of Fortune<\/em> magazine&#8230;because he finds it interesting. And those interests in turn help create some amazingly entertaining radio features.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the days when I occasionally would guest-host a talk radio show, I knew I could rely on three magazines to provide me with fresh ideas for interesting guests and topics that aren&#8217;t featured on every other station:<\/p>\n<p><em>Harper&#8217;s, Inc.,<\/em> and <em>Columbia Journalism Review.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t read them because they&#8217;re a source of radio ideas; I read them because I happened to find them interesting.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what you read for pleasure (or for mental stimulation), I guarantee you can find a way to use the material to make your on-air performance more original and more reflective of your personality.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Grow As A Person.
