{"id":11002,"date":"2011-09-13T00:01:20","date_gmt":"2011-09-13T07:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=11002"},"modified":"2011-09-12T00:12:21","modified_gmt":"2011-09-12T07:12:21","slug":"radio-show-catch-phrase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/radio-show-catch-phrase\/","title":{"rendered":"ENDING YOUR RADIO SHOW WITH YOUR OWN CATCH PHRASE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I wrote about the <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/radio-show-goodbye\">bad advice<\/a> many radio personalities have been given: &#8220;Never say goodbye at the end of your show, because that tells people you&#8217;re leaving.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one solution that works quite well for some jocks:<\/p>\n<p>Come up with a standardized way (which does not necessarily mean saying the same thing verbatim every day) of ending your show.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a humorous on-air style, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danoday.com\/showcloses\">this<\/a> will help you:<\/p>\n<p>You might choose to use the same words to end each program.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Casey Kasem<\/strong><\/span> got a lot of mileage out of, <em>&#8220;Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(No, that&#8217;s a bit too schmaltzy to fit my style. But to his everlasting good fortune, Casey is not I.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Paul Harvey<\/strong><\/span> relied on just two words \u2014 plus a ton of precipitous silence \u2014 to end his program: <em>&#8220;Good day!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two generations back, American TV journalist <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Edward R. Murrow<\/strong><\/span> ended each report with, <em>&#8220;Good night and good luck.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Granted, <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Dan Rather<\/strong><\/span> had a lot less success with the bizarre, pretentious <em>&#8220;Courage&#8221;<\/em> as his sign-off. But hey, he tried.)<\/p>\n<p>A generation later, it was <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Carol Burnett<\/strong><\/span> tugging on her earlobe at the end of her comedy\/variety show. (A signal to her grandmother. I always hated that. But I didn&#8217;t watch the show very much, and I&#8217;m sure it was a hit with her fans.)<\/p>\n<p>Long ago on Los Angeles radio, I would enjoy the wry remarks of <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>The World Famous Tom Murphy<\/strong><\/span>, who often ended his show by saying, <em>&#8220;And remember, each day do a little bit more than is expected of you&#8230;and pretty soon they&#8217;ll come to expect it of you.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Years later I met Tom and told him how much I used to enjoy that sign-off. Tom told me the story behind it, which I&#8217;m sure we&#8217;d all be quite amused by if only I could remember it.<\/p>\n<p>But rather than frequently ending his show that way, he should have ended <strong>every<\/strong> program with it. Then it would have become his trademark.<\/p>\n<p>Huh??<\/p>\n<p>Didn&#8217;t I already say I do not necessarily mean you should say the same thing verbatim every day?<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>But if you say it so often that people wait for you to say it at the end of your show, it&#8217;s probably a good idea to give them what they want.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next Installment:<\/strong> Don&#8217;t like ending with your own catch phrase?
