{"id":10931,"date":"2011-09-08T00:01:50","date_gmt":"2011-09-08T07:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/?p=10931"},"modified":"2011-09-05T23:17:58","modified_gmt":"2011-09-06T06:17:58","slug":"radio-show-goodbye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/radio-show-goodbye\/","title":{"rendered":"ENDING YOUR RADIO SHOW &#8211; NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Were you ever told something like, <em>&#8220;You should never say goodbye at the end of your show, because that tells people you&#8217;re leaving&#8221;?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You were told wrong.<\/p>\n<p>As a radio DJ, it&#8217;s a good bet that you believe in the value of &#8220;one-to-one communication&#8221; between air talent and listener.<\/p>\n<p>You talk to your audience; you don&#8217;t shout at them.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re creative and compelling \u2014 yet conversational.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re a genuine &#8220;personality,&#8221; not &#8220;just an announcer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You create a personal connection with your listeners. You share your wit, your humor, even your life.<\/p>\n<p>But at the end of your show, you just&#8230;disappear??<\/p>\n<p><strong>Imagine This:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re at a party, engaged in an enjoyable conversation with someone you&#8217;ve just met.<\/p>\n<p>You glance away for just a moment, but when you look back&#8230;the other person has disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>How would you feel?<\/p>\n<p>Mystified, certainly. Off-balance. Maybe slightly offended.<\/p>\n<p>The person just vanished without even a &#8220;see \u2019ya later&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what it&#8217;s like when the last song of your show ends, the next program begins&#8230;and you never even bothered to say &#8220;see \u2019ya.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sure, you want your audience to stick around for the program that follows yours. But you also want to maintain that bond you&#8217;ve established with your listeners.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Standard, Dumb Way<\/h3>\n<p>Of course, many jocks do say goodbye at the end of their shows. But most of them do it so weakly, so ineffectually, so&#8230;.so lamely that it&#8217;s almost embarrassing:<br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Well, uh, I see we&#8217;re out of time, so, uh, thanks for being here with us today&#8230;.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Good grief.
