I even coined a name for this that has become widely used: <a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/Contextual-Radio-Programming\/\"><strong>Contextual Radio Programming<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve pointed out that the difference between a music personality and a jukebox is:<\/p>\n<p>The experience of the song is always the same when played by a jukebox.<\/p>\n<p>A while ago I found myself in a restaurant in England, having dinner with a couple of radio blokes the night before a seminar.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant had a music track in the background, consisting of pop hits from the early &#8217;70s. Being an old radio programmer, during the dinner I found myself noticing &amp; critiquing their music programming.<\/p>\n<p>One pair of songs they played leapt out at me, because they shared a context.<\/p>\n<p>Those songs were <strong>Don McLean&#8217;s<\/strong> &#8220;American Pie&#8221; and <strong>Roberta Flack&#8217;s<\/strong> &#8220;Killing Me Softly With His Song.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both had been massive hits, of course. But they form a unique context.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/DonMcLean-AmericanPie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10885\" title=\"Don McLean American Pie\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/DonMcLean-AmericanPie.jpg\" alt=\"Radio music programming\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/DonMcLean-AmericanPie.jpg 320w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/DonMcLean-AmericanPie-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/DonMcLean-AmericanPie-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>In 1972, &#8220;American Pie&#8221; was nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>It lost both awards to a record by Roberta Flack: &#8220;The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 1973, another Don McLean song \u2014 <strong>Perry Como&#8217;s<\/strong> recording of &#8220;And I Love You So&#8221; \u2014 was nominated for Record of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, though, Roberta Flack came out on top, winning Song of the Year and Record of the Year again with &#8220;Killing Me Softly With His Song.&#8221;<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/RobertaFlack-KillingMeSoftly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10886\" title=\"Roberta Flack Killing Me Softly With His Song\" src=\"http:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/RobertaFlack-KillingMeSoftly.jpg\" alt=\"Radio programming music\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/RobertaFlack-KillingMeSoftly.jpg 320w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/RobertaFlack-KillingMeSoftly-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/danoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/RobertaFlack-KillingMeSoftly-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>&#8220;Killing Me Softly With His Song&#8221; was written by <strong>Norman Gimbel &amp; Charles Fox<\/strong> and originally was recorded by <strong>Lori Lieberman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Lori had attended a performance at a small club in Los Angeles called The Troubadour, and she was blown away by one of the songs by one of the acts.<\/p>\n<p>She described her feelings to Gimbel &amp; Fox, and they turned her feelings into a song.<\/p>\n<p>The singer who impressed her so much was&#8230;Don McLean.<\/p>\n<p>And the song that affected her so deeply was&#8230;&#8221;American Pie.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pretty cool, huh?<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a context.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also pretty solid evidence that you do not want to eat dinner with me&#8230;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have written extensively about the importance of putting the music you play into some sort of context.
