Great observations. One comment regarding your “I” theory. Years ago (1977) when I got my first newspaper column, a wise editor told me never to use “I” in print: “You’re not the story; the story is what’s important.” In hindsight, it was good advice because at that age – 23 – I (oops) was of a mindset that the world revolved around me. What person in their 20s doesn’t? I followed her advice for years until 1) I had polished my writing style and 2) I had enough experience to know when a first-person (“I”) use would connect and engage while still making the content primary. Having now done a lot of radio, too, I’m convinced that it’s the smart announcer who knows it’s only OK to talk when you have actual content and to shut up, say your name and move on when you don’t.
