You hit it spot on, Dan. My philosophy has always been to discard the first punchline that comes to mind. Chances are every other jock has thought of it and will use it. Dig down deeper, and you’ll find more gems; original ones.
My favorite was years ago when the dolphin that played Flipper died. I decided to do a live report from Biscayne Bay where his dolphin sisters and brothers honored him with a 21-blowhole salute. Well, being fresh from New Hampshire, I failed to realize how revered he was in South Florida. Oops. It may have even been the beginning of the end for me at that station. Years after that, ironically enough, I was cast as the head of the Dolphin Research Institute in the New Adventures of Flipper. And, so it goes…
