Every now and then I get a question that defies a rational answer.
Like this one:
“My radio station needs to earn additional revenue outside of sponsors and advertisers. Do you have any recommendations?”
A commercial radio station that needs to attract additional revenue that involves neither advertisers nor sponsors.
Hmm.
A few quick ideas off the top of my head….
• Rent the transmitter to people trying to communicate with distant galaxies.
• Lease your interns as slave labor.
• Convert the production room into a meth lab. (That might require only
minimal changes.)
A friend of mine added this suggestion:
• Lease double-wide mobile home plots in the parking lot.
Actually, that suggestion isn’t as inconceivable as you might think. I know of a certain major market radio station — call letters you would recognize — that on weekends rents out its conference room for private meetings.
Perhaps you, too, have some suggestions?

Ntr events like concerts generate ticket sales. U could trade out a big item and sell raffle tix and keep the money. Or u could make the staff sell blood plasma and give the station the proceeds. The humane thing to do is to turn in the license to the FCC bc if you can’t figure out a way to generate enough dough via advertisers and sponsors you don’t need to be in business bc while alternatives will generate some money, not sure it’s enough to be a real difference maker to the bottom line. Maybe u guys can out in a drive thru window and sell sandwiches.
A few local stations have teamed up with DJ companies to provide DJ services with the station brand for various events. Maybe it’s more of a branding opportunity then making $$$, but I doubt they’re losing money on it.
I hope anonymous was kidding about the raffle…Prize, Chance, Consideration? Pretty sure those lottery rules apply to us, too.
A local station built storage garages on their transmitter site to rent.
You need a new GM who doesn’t have his head shoved up his ass. Like the poster above any station who’s sales staff can’t make enough money off advertising is a station who’s GM (and SM) is worthless.
