Straight talk about radio programming, radio advertising, radio production…Well, you get the idea.
WHEN I WAS TINY, THIS WAS INCREDIBLY EXCITING ON TV

Beware, ye tuner in-ers, watch out for Crabby Appleton, he’s lots nastier than Pittsburgh the Pirate! Gentle humor from a more-innocent time. The real crime is that there are no original Captain Kangaroo shows on DVD. Sadly, most of those have been lost to time and bad archive management.

Are you going to post the next adventure?
I loved this when I was a kid too… and I’m pretty impressed by it now. No CGI, no exlposions, not even a music bed other than the theme song. And ONE GUY did all the voices? But what’s really cool is that it still holds up. My 8 year old daughter was walking past while I was watching this and she immediately took to it. Proof once again that a great story will always work no matter how “low tech” the media!

Whoops, misspelled explosions. Need more coffee.

John is very right. Good, fun storytelling was the compelling factor with a cast of enjoyable characters.
Maybe radio can relearn from this that it is not the high tech but the relationship with the audience that is key to people wanting to tune in.
And you don’t need ‘celebrities’ doing voices either.

The first memory I have is watching Tom Terrific on the Captain Kangaroo show.

Memories: Tom Terrific at two and Gerald McBoingboing (who got me interested in audio) at three.

That was a blast form the past!

I was always partial to Mighty Manfred, The Wonder Dog.

Ah, memories, Tom Terrific and Gerald McBoingboing. Hardly ever find anyone who remembers Gerald! Yes they still work.

WOW. We are of like minds. I ADORED those TERRY-TOONS
adventures of TOM TERRIFIC and MIGHTY MANFRED, THE WONDER DOG (and the evil CRABBY APPLETON) in glorious black & white. I’ve been able to find several episodes of this cartoon series in video trades. Great memories.

I remember that particular episode. Captain Kangaroo and romper room were my second TV memories. The Magic Mirror….. Hummmm….. The drawing on the magic screen…..hummm.
