MONDAY COMMERCIAL SMACKDOWN: Dodge Ram Trucks (and the Grassy Knoll)

Here are two commercials for Dodge’s Ram truck.

Which, in case you overlook the subtle “Look How Great We Are” references, has received an award.

As will, no doubt, the agency that created the 60-second version.

    Dan,

Enjoyed your breakdown of the Dodge ram commercial, it seems to me advertisements are more about the flashy side of what “could” be done with that truck, but the 30 sec spot nails it for basically what the truck is all about, what makes it such a great vehicle and all the new bells and whistles you get with it.

it certainly isn’t the worst spot (that in my opinion goes the Mcdonald’s “i haven’t had my Coffee yet” commercial.)

I agree with you, Dan, neither of these spots are great. But I do think the first one is better than you do and better than the :30. When I watched it I went away with the feeling that this is one tough truck. Your analysis makes total sense but many times feelings and emotions can’t be explained.

Dan, I enjoyed you breakdown of the :60 commercial and have to agree. It seems to me that todays :60 are more about fluff and mini movies then selling the product. The :30 commercial drove home waht was needed to sell the product. Yes, the :60 was creative and kept my attention, but more so about what I was seeing, not about the truck. I enjoyed this breakdown, Thank you for what you do!

The :60 is a perfume spot that is selling trucks. Almost to the point of laughable….the :30 is more practical.

both are award flag waving about the motor trend truck for 2010. I know it takes more then that for me to buy any vehicle, so must be more focused for the competition! I’m sure the price reflects the motor trend award also, which would leave it out of a lot of the public’s price range, though I suppose people wants to be “truck poor”

Where are the O’Day outtakes? lotsa cuts near the end. This background thing is new?

  • Dan O'Day April 5, 2010, 9:44 am

@Scott: Repeated cuts due to several unfortunate wardrobe malfunctions.

Change in background is due to my relocation to secret underground chamber. Not bad, really, except for having to share a bathroom with Cheney. He tends to hog all the hot water.
