Each Tuesday of Harlan Hogan’s month-long STARTING YOUR VOICEOVER BUSINESS: Everything You Need To Know To Turn Your Dream Or Your Sideline Into A Business teleseminar series includes an open-ended Q&A session.
Here’s what our students had to say about the one (the first) we completed tonight.

Excellent stuff tonight. We covered a lot of ground, got some good insights. My favorite bit was Harlan’s tease about the story he’s going to tell tomorrow. I also really appreciated the answer to my question. Fascinating insight into what prompted Harlan to really focus on finding business for his own voiceover work.
I’ll be on Facebook before next Monday and will join you in the group, assuming I’m approved.
Harlan was kind, and I appreciated his straightforwardness.
I liked the fact that he has a mantra. “…v.o. work is getting the work.” That will help me stay focused when I become discouraged or get off track.
Regarding Tuesday night, I learned about some great websites, and I learned at least 2 amazing business tips! 1) buying the phone # of an expired v.o. company 2) buy misspelled web address as well
I can honestly say everytime I thought I had a question, It was asked/answered before I could even ask.
My enthusiam level does nothing but grow with each call.
I enjoyed the Q&A session much more than I thought I would.
Harlan’s computer sales story is so true. I did a VO for a company promo film with a company that did helicopter maintenance. One of the reasons I got the job was because I used to fly helicopters in the Navy and really understood their business and the terminology.
Good questions, good to hear answers in depth. Learned a lot tonight, especially about pro bono work.
Always looking for other ways to be of service, using my voice.
thanks!
Great questions, and great marketing tips. I think that the guerilla marketing tips that pop into you and Harlan’s mind by accident are more impressive than most marketing classes I’ve ever attended.
I really enjoy the direction this class is beginning to take.
Accessible, knowledgeable, thorough, approachable. Just a few words to describe these 2 stooges. Oh, and fun!
I have already gotten my money’s worth!
Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions– and for going over the time allotted– greatly appreciated.
I like the idea of the Q & A because more often than not someone asks a question that we may not have thought of but the information is important.
I also like the idea of moving things along and not being repetative by forgoing questions that will be covered in later modules.
Once again I have to say that this was fantastic! You guys are really doing an excellent job of breaking down all the questions and giving straight answers to everything I need to know and many things I didn’t know I need to know – which I think is even more important!
What I really liked was that you had a great answer for every single question – you both must have been planning this out for weeks! The dedication you’re giving this class is beyond inspirational to me and I am convinced without a doubt that I made the right choice to sign up and spend the money!
Thanks for this evening. Good session: good Q & A, w/some usefully fine distinctions. Also good handling of deferrals to later classes
Plenty of substance: I took nearly 6 pages of notes – and I’m only *orally* verbose.
I really enjoyed both Monday night and Tuesday nights classes. Both of you are so charismatic and it is fun to learn from you.
I love it that you dispelled so many myths for me. You guys Rock! Especially for #’s 2, 4,6,10,11,13,15.
The fact that you even offered and helped create the email/friend list for the classmates made me actually feel good. The training I’ve had over the last few months not only promotes the standoffish/competitive atmosphere they actually get angry with people who exchange contact information. This class and you guys are truly a breath of fresh air and it makes me feel good to know that this industry really isn’t like that. I truly believe in Networking and the ‘word of mouth’ kind of philosophy. I’m happy that it works for the ‘real people’ in this business. Yeah!
I can’t wait for the next classes, I’m gonna be so GOOD when you’re done with me.
What more can I say than your Q & A was absolutely great.
Tuesday's call really helped flesh out some of what Harlan touched on Monday night. The parts about balancing time between Entrepreneur, Manager & Craftsperson… Audition is a sales call…Cold calling really being two people talking about mutually solving a problem…making the demo simpler…ISDN…and long-distance Voice Coaches were very helpful. In addition, you both are making the calls not just informative, but relaxed and fun too!
And Dan, you were talking about Harold Taylor… in my hands is an O'Liners 1994 (time really does fly!) cassette by Harold, "The 90 Minute Hour". I'll have to give it another listen.
Very much liked the “raise your hand” format for Q & A. I have been on other conference calls where they just open all the lines for Q & A and it turns into a who-can-talk-the-loudest-and-fastest-free-for-all. Tonight’s call was very controlled and easy to listen to.
Even though I did not ask any questions myself, I took tons of notes and have added a few more actions to my action plan. It’s amazing what one can pick up just by listening…the whole discussion around keeping a phone number was really helpful. And domain names. Do you know how many ways there are to spell “Christensen” (must be a Scandinavian thing…)? Lots of great little tidbits of info that I will be combing through and seeing how I can apply them to my voiceover business.
I do have another business endeavor in the health & wellness field, and tonight it occurred to me I can take a lot of the info I am picking up here and apply it to that business as well. The concepts you are teaching are good business practices that I think can be tweaked to fit any field. I’m really glad I’m here.
The whole pro-bono conversation was a great one. Once I am ready (set up with my studio)…I am looking forward to getting involved in some volunteer work and civic groups. I have returned to southern California after a rather long stint in Minneapolis, and I don’t have many contacts here. Doing pro bono/volunteer work will give me a chance to get to know more folks in my new home area – do some good – and get some work.
When I’ve thought of my career in voiceover, I never took it down to the local, what’s in my backyard, level – the business in my town, local hospitals (there are a ton here…) etc. Now I am seeing opportunity everywhere.
Good session last night. I liked the way you could raise your hand without stepping on anyone. I jotted a lot of great ideas down.
Another interesting and informative session last night! Do you guys ever sleep? I noticed my mp3 file from last night was sent in the wee hours of the morning! Thanks for your dedication to your craft, and your willingness to share the realities of making a VO business a success!
I asked the question last night about time management to balance the various aspects of a VO career, and the other question about whether you’ll discuss financial software in an upcoming program. I am so impressed not only with your knowledge, but also the gracious, respectful, and often humorous way you answer everyone’s questions in turn. Summoning up the courage to ask a question in an unseen forum is huge for me, but when the answers are genuine and thoughtful, it sets up a true give and take learning environment. That’s incredibly hard to do when you don’t even get to see who you are talking to! I marvel that you two are pulling it off beautifully!
Lastly, Dan, please remember to send us the email link about your discussion email with Ann de Wigg. (You asked to be reminded last night.)
I’m looking forward to tonight’s session, and am getting onto my FB to join our newly formed group!
I really enjoyed last night’s question/answer class since everyone’s questions
mirrored my own and more to the point, you both answered them thoroughly and your combined insights into radio and marketing/ business backgrounds added more dimension and the depth to the information!
I did have one remaining question which was to reprise the three parts or ‘hats’ of running a business, regarding the responsibilities of the ‘entrepreneur – manager – and craftsman’. I have the category and job outline straight on the ‘craftsman’ but as to the entrepreneur and manager, aside from the concept to have a business in the first place, I think I’m blurring their duties a bit. Is this the entrepreneur who does the marketing and promoting – and it is the manager amasses and manipulates the components – the nuts and bolts direction of how the product is accomplished?
In any case, I am getting a lot out of the class and working on the assignments as well! I still kind of wish I could hear Harlan a bit louder over my speakerphone though! 🙂 I am typing notes as the class is progressing(because my handwriting is like a doctor’s!) and I’m avoiding that special kink-in-the-neck of cramping the receiver between your shoulder and chin!
Actually, a lot more interesting than I expected. The questions were quite good and the answers even better. Some of the websites mentioned by both students and faculty appear to be quite informative.
I’m especially appreciative of the “raise your hand” housekeeping action. Whoever came up with that should be elected to the Teleclass Hall of Fame! What a great way to bring order and structure to this type of venue, where in the past, numbers of people try and speak at the same time, wasting time.
Well, just got back from the library where I checked out my audiobooks and now I’m off to the periodontist. ( I know, too much information.)
Will check back in tonight for “getting things done”.
Great stuff guys–keep it coming.
Lot’s and Lot’s of great information.
I’m hocked can’t wait until tonight
