Just a quick note to give you some feedback on the teleseminar today. Without being patronizing, and without teaching the grandma to suck eggs, you did what you should always do with these things.

    You exceeded my expectations.

This is the first Dan O’Day event that exceeded my expectations. You sometimes have matched them and on several occasions been below them, but this exceeded them by a mile.

The fact that you guys were willing to hang around to answer every single question spoke volumes. The great thing about technology was that for an affordable price (still quite a bit with the exchange rate!) I could listen in, whilst washing up in a dressing gown, at a reasonable time (during the day in the US is evening in the UK – still doable). I also felt brave enough to ask a question anonymously.

Knowing that I would get an mp3 made me not worry about missing the odd few minutes. And I actually was not intending to be on the call, but a last minute cancellation meant that I could be.

Good value guys – nice one.

Thank you so much for your time and expertise with this afternoon’s teleseminar on Starting a Voiceover Business. I think you make a good team. I appreciate Dan’s care in providing the details of some terms that people might not be familiar with and in spelling out web sites or other titles and references. This made a nice counterpoint to Harlan’s folksier, more anecdotal approach to talking about the business.

Because you both have solid reputations, and because your price was not out of my range, I trusted that this event would not be a waste of money. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of time you spent with us and the breadth of the subject matter covered. Your patience and candor was also refreshing, too. I think you were honest about what some of us might expect to encounter as we begin, especially when it comes to using the services of others who might want to exploit our lack of experience. This exceeded my expectations and I am grateful for this time. I have enjoyed my 20-year career in radio, and am looking forward to a rewarding voiceover business, too.

Harlan [and Dan]- Thanks for a very informative 3 hours!! Who thought it would last that long??!!

At first, I was a little worried that I had the wrong seminar since the people asking questions sounded more experienced than I expected…but things really got into the nitty-gritty and you far exceeded my expectations by the time we got through everything.

And thanks to all the questioners…they voiced a lot of concerns/questions that were in my brain somewhere, but it was sure nice to have someone say them out loud.

Since I’m re-recording my commercial track in a few weeks, the comments about ‘over produced’ demos is something that will go on my check list. And now I can go ahead with ordering my studio equipment, knowing that no major blunders are being made!

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you! I can’t wait to get the mp3…I’m sure there were golden nuggets of information that got by me and I’m going to find them all. What a treasure!

You proved again the people who are really successful in life do what they meaningfully can in the service of others. (Even if a modest price was involced.)

Stuff I already knew was confirmed, which is always worth hearing. My questions were answered, directly and indirectly. which mey my main expectation for subscribing to the call.

What exceeded my expectations, and more importantly the results all callers may realize, was the sense of optimism, confidence and “yes we can” I heard from every participant—you guys and the listeners alike. You’d never know there’s a recession/depression going on. The “attitude” I heard for the entire four hour exchange was most uplifting. The education was expected. The inspiration was a bonus.

It was the best $61.40 Canadian I’ve invested in a long time. Indeed I owe you one (which doesn’t mean there’s a cheque in the mail. A hand written note of gratitude you can count on).

Dan, thanks for the insightful teleseminar today with Harlan. Great tips and info to help me identify that I am on track in some areas and need work in others. Now I am off to refine my salesmanship and maketing skills. The tough part is going to be deleting the 30 years of radio broadcasting from my bio when I talk with agents…and focus on the ‘voice actor’ in me. I’ll be in touch ….

  • Frank Baum February 7, 2009, 9:42 pm

Excellent. Circumstance had me flat on my back all day.

If it was radio, I’d have had qu’s and comments a-plenty.

This area.. I’m in the humble chair. Best to listen and learn horizons. I’ve never had the benefit of the buddy system unlocking doors. In radio I learned what I learned by listening and doing. Bottom up.

Doing that with audio studio work the best approach even not in the heyday boom time.

Thanks for the opportunity to participate!

    Much appreciate that.

    Thanks Harlan & Dan!
This teleconference seminar was VERY informative and more importantly for me honest!
It gave me a realistic take on how drastically the voice over business has changed since I did my one and only paid gig back in 1997. Way different now.

I do not have the time, space or equipment necessary to launch back into the voice over world at this time. I'm newly divorced and have to work full time at a job that pays the bills. Back in the day, an agent would call and say can you do this audition at such and such time on Tuesday? I would ask my full time employer for 1/2 a day off without pay and make the audition. Now, from what I learned yesterday, that is just not how it's done. I need to be able to MP3 my auditions at a moment's notice. No way to do that from work.
So thanks for the honest feed back, no voice over career for me unless a knight in shining armor steps into my life that doesn't need my immediate income and believes in my talent as much as I do.
I'm very glad that I took the time to attend your seminar, it saved me a great deal of spinning my wheels in the wrong direction.

It was incredible! You answered several of my questions (the critical ones) and I was able to take the information and focus on “what next” regarding the VO business. It was a nice mix of realistic advice for beginners and some things to think about as my business develops. I took about 3 pages of typewritten notes as I was listening, which I will be reviewing often! Thanks again Harlan and Dan – job well done. Great value for the money!

Sid, Julius, and I were pondering the tele-seminar——Oh yeah, this isn’t Star Trek, this is the real world.

I received the MP3 today. Thank you for the quick response. I was very surprised at how generous you both were with the time you put into the seminar. I do look forward to the next one too. I have the equipment and need much help in using it to fullest.

Even though I am new, I can see progress. I think I will be ready for my commercial demo after one more class which has been a series over many months. I just want to say also that I have made many of the basic mistakes you said don’t do. If you ever do a teleseminar about that, (of course it will be a comedy!!) I can be your star.

Very helpful, useful, and very fun information. Thank you.

I must say that I was disappointed with this teleseminar. Firstly, I was unable to participate in the conversation due to my inability to be heard. Both during the preliminary conversation and the Q&A, repeated attempts to be heard were unsuccessful. Secondly, I found the material somewhat superficial. I have been putting together my business plan for almost three months now and have seen advice from experienced VO business people available for free on the internet easily equal to what I heard on your teleseminar.

I agree wholeheartedly with your belief that great marketing will get you through times of mediocre voice talent than will great voice talent get you through times of mediocre marketing. Perhaps a seminar that deals specifically with building a marketing plan going into depth with regard features and functions of such a plan would be worth pursuing.

Harlan confirmed what I knew and explained what I didn’t. After my new business is up and running, after I’ve encountered some problems, I’ll come back to replay this teleseminar just as if I had a wise and encouraging business mentor to help me stay on track.

  • Gregg February 9, 2009, 11:34 am

Thanks for the honest and direct tips during the seminar.

While I got all of my voiceover-specific questions answered, the single most important thing I learned on Saturday was something I already knew. Specifically the advice to just pick something and do it when you have a million different things to do. (I have had a saver page on my website for over a year.) That was the kind of smack-in-the-head reminder that I needed.

That was kind of a bonus to go along with the wealth of knowledge that was shared. Many thanks.

This was the one of the most informative calls I have ever been on. You took complex questions and made the answers easy to understand. You also took very basic questions and answered them without the least bit of condescension.

It didn't seem like almost 4 hours!

Well worth the time & money!

Merci – Thank you – Dunka
How great to have the chance to be a part of your teleseminar. It was very informative and answered many of my questions. Thank you.

Thanks for making this opportunity available to us. I would recommend to all those who participated in the seminar that they buy both of Harlan’s books. The books are like a written transcript of the entire seminar… with pictures. Some things Harlan and you said made more sense after hearing them than just reading about them. It was very encouraging and gave me the boost of confidence I needed to go ahead with VO. Thanks again!
