During my recent trip to Italy, I visited the state-of-the-art studios of R101 — based in Milan but broadcasting to the entire country. Here’s what was going on in the producer’s studio that faced the on-air studio.

Nice to see you “made her hot.” What’s your secret?
It’s fun to watch the reactions as you “play” with the folks you video. It occurs to me that this generates a wealth of possibilities for script writing…taking people out of their comfort zone and seeing how the real person beneath the polished facade reacts. It brings out the real “human”…and you always say to relate to “common human experience”. Most common human experience is pretty boring; placing people outside their comfort zone seldom is.

Absolutely. When working with clients, I ask questions designed to help me understand them, as well as their business.
Here’s a great example of Dick Orkin and I interviewing someone who owns a butcher shop. Warning: The audio clip is on the “sales page” for an audio seminar. But this posting is not a disguised sales pitch. You can just listen to the audio and then quickly leave the Web page w/o buying anything.
This interview doesn’t necessarily take the subject out of his comfort zone, but he certainly is not being asked the kinds of questions other copywriters would ask him:
