Brilliantly done spoof! Sadly quite a few English radio ads aren’t too far different

Howard Hoffman really nails the announce style that Bob Washington made famous. Bob was working at a winnipeg radio station at the time Ktel hit it’s stride in the 70s here in canada and around the world. Dave Thomas also did a great TV ad spoof during his early SCTV days.

There is a 1 hour TV documentary that was produced up here a few years ago on the history of Ktel that TV stations whip out when they need canadian content fill called “As seen on TV-The Ktel story” that is narrated by Dave Thomas. It actually has Bob Washington on camera doing a read. I’m guessing they sold it to TV stations globally, but if you have a chance to see it, it’s worthwhile. Very well done.

He’s still alive, and apparently living in our west, vancouver I believe.

Ditto on Hoffman imitating the original voice, Bob (Washy)Washington. I did all nights at 630 CKRC (Winnipeg) and Washy did mornings. There were a few other CKRC guys that voiced K-Tel spots including me. I remember doing a read for the Flowbee, the vacuum cleaner that also cut your hair! And the owner of K-
Tel would stand right in the voice booth directing how the spot needed to be voiced. And the tag of where the product was available was almost as long as the script.
K-Tel is a fascinating story. Incidentally they have the rights to a pile of songs from those K-Tel compilations and make a small little fortune on downloads!

Thanks for saying which station he was at, the documentary never got into those details.

Also good to know the other voices, as we know that washy didn’t do them all….there’s still more then a few of the TV spots floating around you tube, with different voices.

I could have sworn one guy was Nick Holenreich, who was game show announcer on the rather short lived canadian game show \The Mad Dash\. Just watching the you tube clips, he certainly has a Ktel style.
