MONDAY RADIO COMMERCIAL SMACKDOWN: Volkswagen Joins The Motorcade of Bad Radio Advertising

by Dan O'Day on July 19, 2010

Oops. We seem to have lost our way.

First, the radio commercial:

Attention: Automobile companies that advertise on radio:

The pictures your radio commercials paint are what the audience will remember.

If you’re trying to sell telephone answering machines, this isn’t a terrible commercial.

If you’re trying to sell automobiles, well….That’s another story.

Woof. I heard a bunch of annoying and then a whole lot of weasel speak!

Dan, it’s a shame they missed the mark on this one.

I’ve been hearing and enjoying (after repeated listening) some really clever radio commercials promoting VW’s Certified Pre-owned cars. Each spot in the campaign (I’ve heard two or three different ones) is built around an unexpected telephone call and brief conversation between the current and former owners of the car in question, one of whom exhibits embarrassing enthusiasm for the car. Funny and effective. Familiar with them?

Who Owns Whose Words

When you post something on this blog, you retain the right to use your words elsewhere.

I get to use your words elsewhere, too: in a newsletter, book, 3-D hologram, major motion

But you don't get to take the stuff I write here – even if it's in response to something you
wrote – and use it elsewhere.

Just so you know.

Thanks,
