MONDAY RADIO COMMERCIAL SMACKDOWN: I Don’t Like This Spot

by Dan O'Day on June 15, 2009

This is the fourth in a series of critiques of award-winning radio commercials — those honored as “the best of the best” by the 2007 Radio Mercury Awards.

I don’t like this radio commercial. It’s hackneyed, corny, false, fake.

But…

By the end of the spot I did get the message that when you fly Jet Blue, you get to watch Direct TV on the seatback on in front of you.

In other words: Good commercial.

What would've been worse…?

MAN 1 – Hey where have you been?

MAN 2 – I just got back from New York on Jet Blue, with four non=stop flights daily for my convenience and 36 channels of Direct TV on every seatback. And their expert staff really knows how to fly the plane.

MAN 1 – Wow, I should call my travel agent now to take advantage of Jet Blue's great service.

MAN 2 – And you know, the summer travel season is just around the corner. Jet Blue is your one stop flying on an airplane headquarters.

@Mike: Through some horrendous oversight, you omitted perhaps the most important line:

MAN 1: What's that phone number again?

They could have just said it in plain English…cuz the funny wasn't and it was a waste of eartime…lol.

@Dan

I thought about it, but felt it would've been overkill. It pained me to write what I wrote.

Except this

"Jet Blue is conveniently located at the airport for all your air travel needs."

John June 15, 2009 at 8:57 pm

And their friendly knowledgeable pilots really know how to find those other airports that you may want to fly to!

Steve June 22, 2009 at 12:59 pm

Only one more line to add to that!

" Jet Blue- family owned & operated for 9 years."

Who Owns Whose Words

When you post something on this blog, you retain the right to use your words elsewhere.

I get to use your words elsewhere, too: in a newsletter, book, 3-D hologram, major motion
picture, etc. I'm not saying I will, but it's possible.

But you don't get to take the stuff I write here – even if it's in response to something you
wrote – and use it elsewhere.

Just so you know.

Thanks,
Dan O'Day
